Great watch, simple understated, classic design, built like a brick outhouse and not too expensive. Now I would never say this was naff. Some of the gold rolex's aren't to my taste but this is a classic. So many watches now try to copy the basic style.
Mines 20 yrs old more or less.
Like Southendpier - the above will always be on my wrist.
I've had two previous Rolex, S/S GMT II with a black bezel, Sea Dweller and now a black face S/S Daytona and I wouldn't change it for anthing else as I quite like it. I have been offered good money for it but still won't part with it. I have looked at IWC which are lovely but I still like the look of the Rolex sports watch. I also have an old Tag F1 chronograph which cost £350 12 years ago and it's a fantastic watch again I wouldn't part with it as I like the look of chronograph watches, they're kind of a real mans watch.....as regard to Rolex being tacky I agree some of the all gold are a bit bling but each to their own I say and whatever floats your boat

Has to have the blue and red bezzle - as all the copied (well most) seem to have the black bezel.
Mine has the black/red bezel. I preferred it because I saw too many with the blue/red bezel. I wouldn't have bought a Rolex if I were concerned that someone might think it was a copy.

I'd like to see one in the metal - I'm tempted. I've got too many watches - I can't resist them!
No I've not seen the back.
What would constitute a 'gay' back to a watch by the way?!
I'm just getting into more serious watch collecting - it's a slippery slope!
I don't know how to post a pic, but have a look here for the back: www.atgvintagewatches.com/Blog/tabid/57/EntryID/26/Default.aspx
Oh YUK. I stand corrected. Totally gay.
What a shame - that looked such a cool watch.
What watches do you have at the moment? Anything interesting?
I am close to buying a tourbillon and just wondering if my wife would notice it and indeed register the cost!

I can't believe that someone at IWC sanction this...
"Uh, Lars, I've had this really great idea...."
"Go on, Sven, I'm liking what your about to say"
"This is crazy, but what about making this watch totally fecking pathetic?"
"Tell me"
"Let's put 'TOP GUN FIGHTER WEAPONS SCHOOL' on the back! Our customers will be loving this"
Did that conversation actually happen?!

That's a gay back! I still love the watch though.. and you hardly ever see the back...
I don't have much of interest at the moment and certainly nothing remotely approaching Tourbillon standard. I finally got a vintage speedmaster the other week and have my eye on a 'James Bond' submariner and another (pre-moon) speedmaster.
I'd like a Rolex Milgauss or a Comex but need to plan my strategy carefully ie - of course it's not a new one dear, I've had that one for ages!

Noooooooooooooooooh! You CAN'T want one.
Maxf, some nice watches there and the start of something interesting. Take a look at the Harwood history and current watches. Not of Rolex (vintage)quality but a fascinating watch design (unique). www.harwood-watch.com
I bought one as a collector of such stuff, never wear it (preferring Breguet at the moment) but it's one for the future.... Maybe not your cup of tea?
Not sure why this is in bold!

According to the latest Octane mag (which is a cracking read this month) the IWC top gun is a special edition based on the ceramic pilots watch.. so you can get basically the same without the limp-wristed back by getting the standard black model. If only I had the £££
