True, Mr Trophy - but a quick phonecall to those that are listed would answer that, eh?

By the way I don't think there's any duty on watches. Used to be a specific duty of 50p per watch. I think you'll find that it's VAT free for export you're after.

However if you're on your way out for holiday and planning on returning with the watch, be aware that at 1k you'll exceed your personal limit and would be obliged to declare it on re-import and pay the VAT. Lots try the "oh I'll wear it" ruse which is about as old as the hills but insist on returning with all the warranty info and box etc. It's a very easy spot for a customs guy.

Of course if you're emigrating, buy away smile

You can always wear the watch and post the boxes back to yourself in the UK. whistle

You will find that the shops at the airport are happy to sell you the watch at the VAT free price no matter where you are flying (even within the UK).
I have never bought a watch Tax free and not declared it and neither has my wife whistle

When I was in the job at the mailing office we used to look out for empty watch boxes and pay a post-holiday visit to the unsuspecting watch-buyer...

Did this 'post-holiday visit' involve taking mail with the recipients name on it and pushing it through a rectangular slot in their door?

Yes, wear the watch etc or I know that I have been offered to buy the watch and have it either posted to me, or to another store or collect it upon return.

Alas no. Witty reply wink But the overseas mailing offices have customs looking at packages just like they do in the red/green channel at the airports.

I think there will be a post office airside at Gatwick so you could just post it within the UK that way

hehe I know they monitor the post for high-value items they can send a VAT bill for, but I just find it hard to believe that finding an empty watch box would be grounds for C&E to raid your house. If they found a suitcase full of them, maybe.
