I've always had a thing for the Rolex Milgauss and my other half and my father have decided to buy me a watch for my 40th. Now I'm on the cusp of having a good watch I'm really not sure I want my family to part with that much cash and so I'm thinking about asking them to change to an omega moon watch, roughly 50% of the cost. My wife spilled the beans earlier...she' can't keep a secret!

You could suggest contributing the other 50% yourself and have what you REALLY want!

Im not sure that Id agree that a hand winding Moon Watch was a booby prize. It is an equally desirable watch in my opinion, and just as much a keeper as the Milgauss.

Either would make a good start and you need to realise that it probably will be a start...

Agreed, the moonwatch is a worthy part of anyones collection be it one or twenty watches.

I've got one, but wear it infrequently as I'm trying to keep it mint (for me, not to sell at any time!)

It is if he doesn't want it!

And therefore obviously it's a less desirable watch in his opinion confused

OP I understand you don't want your family to pay out double, but equally, don't let them get you something you don't want. The above suggestion of adding half yourself seems sensible.

Thanks for the comments and advice. I'm going to go and have a close look at both of them next weekend and try and make a decision! Thanks to Eleven for posting that Rolex up, that is rather nice.

Allow me to interject with a bit of sense here – Speedies are a dime a dozen, and had more limited edition variants than a Chinese has order numbers!
Completely passé and no-one ever needs to have one, ever – I've not, and never will because it looks mediocre at very best.

Stick with the original plan, and go with the new blue dial version.
Alternatively, if the overall cost is an issue, then opt for an Aqua Terra 41.5mm, in blue.

Each I their own but the original speedy isn't like a Chinese order number.

Of course Rolex haven't taken advantage of any of their models and changed them a teeny weeny but to ensure sales continue now have they wink

Bit of a bump this, but thought I was doing well when the wife bought me a Seamaster chronograph for my wedding present.

But if the Milgauss is your grail watch, then you'll always regret not going for it. The Speedie is hardly a second rate alternative (in fact it's the very watch I'm looking to get next), but you'll always be asking yourself "what if" ?

Keep us posted on what choice you eventually make.

Thanks Mr D. I've been to have a close look today and the Explorer was a surprise first choice, elegant, understated and comfortable. The Milgauss is amazing, but the is a bit thick for me. Going to have a look at the speedy on Wednesday.

Explorer I or II?

I do love the explorer I, think that'll be my next present to myself.

Just remember that if there is something that you absolutely LOVE, every penny you spend on something else moves you further away from that thing you absolutely loved, so try to get what you really want by making use of their kind contribution!

Explorer I, felt great on the wrist and I love the simple elegance. I've always coveted the Mil, but it was heavy, had a deep case and I'm pleased I have tried it. The new blue Mil is rather nice, I just preferred the Explorer. Will check out the omega's next week and make a final decision.

I too coveted the milgauss and went in to my local jeweller with every intention of buying one but was put off by the case thickness. It looked a bit big on my girly little wrists. Instead I ended up going for an Omega Seamaster Gauss for 3 reasons 1)The thickness thing 2) You can see the motion in the Omega despite it being a Gauss watch 3) Price smile

I love the Omega. I was at the jewellers the other day and nosing around the Rolexs and I made the right decision for me but it did make me realise that the rolex itch is going to have to be scratched at some point probably with the explorer I

All down to personal preference but as someone who has just received a Milgausss for their 40th birthday present I'd say go for it - they really are lovely watches. I've already got a Rolex Sub with date but fancied something different so a white faced Milgauss with its polished bracelet and no date was perfect.

It is a thick watch when you first put it on, but as is the way with such things (think that 50" TV that looked so big when you first got it) after a day or so it just looks 'normal'. I've got pretty small wrists and it really does look fine to me.

Got mine from Watches of Distinction in Lymington. Good price anyway, decent part ex for three other watches I no longer wore (which actually included a Speedmaster Reduced), and a very pleasant experience overall.

Good luck though whatever you choose.

Go for the one you want.

I got a pressure washer for my 40th birthday, and it wasn't even a Karcher!

Just looked up the Seamaster Gauss - it's gorgeous!
