Potential swap... Porsche Rolex
Discussion
Hi guys,
My bro currently has a Porsche Boxster 987 up for sale on eBay. He's been offered a swap/part ex against a Rolex. Details as follows: 1985 Datejust bi-metallic w/ box and papers.
Personally I have told him I wouldn't entertain this... I would simply say to the guy, sell your watch, and give me the money but, he's considering it if there's extra money to be made on the sale of the watch as well.
Thoughts?
Would there be protection from eBay/PayPal if it turned out not to be genuine?

If he does consider, meet in person and take it to a trusted of his choosing. If verified, fine. If not, then it’s not… would also give your bro a chance to ask any questions to the jeweller as well.
And that’s the first stage to its authenticity: if the seller is fine with authentication they will agree to it. If they don’t or accuse your bro of not trusting them, then back away.

Thanks, I've passed these messages on to him.

I can’t see that it’d be a fake/scam.. are people really making fakes of 80’s models to a high standard? If it was a scam the deal would be more appealing. Effectively offering up a 4K watch for 5k is not scammer territory! From what you can see of it, box and papers look good, I’d be more concerned that it’s definitely not worthwhile..

You can buy that box for £30You can buy *better looking* papers for £30 - that looks like a photocopy. Just look at the seal...
Fake watch £10
Easy fake/scam and less suspicious than a GMT etc.
The important bit of the cert is cropped out - that and it's an HK cert stamp without any signatures or reference numbers.
Personally? bargepole territory

And this is how people are taken in by fakes, "No-one surely makes fakes of 80s models?"
"No-one surely makes fakes of cheap Seikos?"
"No-one surely makes fakes that good?"
If there's money to be made, there's fakes being produced.

From the images, the watch looks to be a reasonably nice 16013 Datejust. A quick check with an experienced dealer will confirm that the watch is correct, check with the Watch Register wouldnt hurt either. The images show the watch in a later/current type box with the correct COSC chronometer cert/warranty paperwork. Again, a quick check by an experienced dealer will conform the authenticty. I'd be happy to do so.This is his car... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/285809155007

I've no idea of 987 values. If we assume the car is worth £6895 as listed. The deal as offered, the watch and £1800 is going to leave the seller with a notable downside. As a dealer we would struggle to realise anymore than £4000 or so when selling. A private seller or selling to the trade will realise less. If the car is worth £6895, then £3000 as the cost to change would be more like it.
From the images, the watch watch looks to be in good used condition with wear consistent with a nicely looked after 40 year old watch. This is not a model that superclone producers tend to bother with as the market perfers buying copies of late/current models.
A quick enquiry to Watchfinder to see what they would pay for a good 1985 Datejust 16013, would affirm the trade value. With a little help from experienced buyers to confirm the validity of the watch, it's straightforward enough to complete. As this would be a direct sale, the watch would not go through the ebay authentication process, so would be sold/bought as seen.
You're welcome to call if you'd like anymore help.
Cheers

I’ve got an identical fake Rolex to that purchased from the market in Lanzarote circa 20 years ago……. They were everywhere at the time, tread carefully OPCrippsCorner said:

The buyer should sell the watch and your brother take the full amount in cash. Boxters are not that difficult to sell are they?My bro currently has a Porsche Boxster 987 up for sale on eBay.
