Interesting, Sky says the Port Stanley bomb runs were the longest in History.

Surely the B2 runs from USA to Iraq in the recent illegal invasion were longer?

Of course! The BBC would never promote somthing as patriotic and stirring as the rebirth of a British legend. Just think of the minorities! Plus all the child killing pollution comming out of those glorious engines.

In no way am I jaded!

Anyway, good work to all those involved in getting this beautiful lady back into the air.

What an awesome and fantastic achievement!

I think they've got their facts in a twist or missed a bit off. They "were" until the B2 missions.

They were at the time. It is only recently with the operational use of the B2 that they were overtaken.

Bloody fantastic news. For any of you lot lucky enough to witness this, I am insanely jealous!

I now have the motivation to get off my arse and get myself to an airshow or two next year to once again hear that howl and watch in awe.

Well done to everyone involved. A truly inspiring dedication to the cause and unltimate success against the odds.

They've been a bit wobbly all day - the first voiceover as she went up said that XH 855 was finally airborne hehe

Great great news!! I'd heard that the clearance had been given from 15th Oct for test flights so it was just a matter of time. I just want to go home and catch Sky news now.

If anyone witnessed the landing those front wheels are owned by me and my old man, not a bad purchase!!

As a guess it depends where they were despatched from in the US. If the B2 were on the Eastern seaboard, then the US flights may well of been shorter by a considerable distance.

(Just my guess at looking at the world map from Autoroute).

Actually, they are based in Montana, and by my rough sticking my fingers on the screen - if the distances are right - there isn't much between Montana and Iraq and UK and Falklands. That doesn't take into account any short cut the B2 could make over Greenland.

Once a record is held, its held forever. New people/events can only surpass the record, creating a NEW record. Therefore, it was and always will be the longest bombing run in history, in the context of when the 'record' was recorded.

We dont say (or at least shouldnt say) 'Steve Ovett' used to be a world record holder. He will always be a World record holder, its just that his record has now been surpassed, by others. But their record is a seperate record. A seperate event in time no less.

There are current and past records, current and past champions. its only poor use of the English language by comentators saying 'former world record holder' or 'former world champions'. World Champions are forever world champions, not 'former'. Just that they are no longer THE current world champions/current record holders.

A subtle difference, but I beleive an important difference.

The Guiness book of Records is after all republished every year. They dont print an errarta list every year changeing all the records that have been broken since the last time it was published....

The only map that you can make such a diverse mesurement on would be a globe, not a flat screen or paper map. No flat map can adequatly depict an accurate measurement of the kind you describe. Maps are flat and distances are stretched or compressed to dipict a representation of a round Earth on a flat surface. All printed maps are in fact 'lies'. You just need to know which particular 'lie' a map is using to depict the information shown.

lies - otherwise known as projections.

In which case the US runs were considerably longer, seeing as the Vulcan flew from the Ascension Islands wink

Should be The DamBusters, IIRC 617 flew the Vulcan.

This is great news for all concerned, One of the finest examples of British Engineering in the Post War years, and how a small band of people can acheive what was thought of as impossible - getting her in the air again. I look forward to the 2008 airshow season smile
