1982 was the last year Sally B performed in her original natural metal scheme. From 1983 onwards she was painted in a green/gray camouflage scheme.
Almost. She was painted olive drab with grey undersides (and all yellow tail surfaces) during the winter of 83/84, so her last display season in natural metal finish was 1983.
I took this photo the last time I saw her display in her natural metal finish, Great Warbirds Display at West Malling in August 1983.
Only a year out
Her initial camouflage colours were not quite right - the green was a bit too green.
She was repainted in the proper Olive Drab/Neutral Gray colours for the film Memphis Belle in 1988 and she has worn that scheme ever since.
In reality, most B-17Gs remained unpainted apart from unit colours and were left mainly in their natural metal finishes.
