Royal Air Force Hawker Henley TT Mark III (serial L3288) of No. 1 Anti-Aircraft Cooperation Unit

What had me a little confused was the lack of a fin flash, and the red appearing darker than the blue, when in b&w photos it was usually the other way round.

Pre-war, not all British aircraft carried fin flashes -

The appearance of the red and blue elements of the roundel can be affected by the type of film and development processes used.

In some pictures, the yellow outer ring can appear darker than the blue ring.

IIRC the RAF only tested the castrated Lighting. The USAAF's version was much better.

Castrated at UK request in typical numpty fashion.

UK requested P-38 to have commonality with existing P-40 fleet, so that meant un-turbosupercharged Allison engines, and both engines to be right hand turning engines as per P-40, whereas P-38 had been designed to have counter-roatating engines.......rolleyes

It was no wonder it was thus a bit of a dog.

USAAF still had the problems with the tail flutter well into early service, and being restricted from diving, which the Germans soon discovered and the problems with lack of cockpit heating meant it was never exactly suited to ops in the ETO.

In the PTO though, it excelled of course, and proved to be excellent in that theatre of ops, with all the top PTO aces flying the P-38, as well as being the only thing that could undertake the famous Yamamoto intercept.

They ran into serious compressibility problems during testing. It was mostly cured by the installation of a dive "flap".
