Run their website. Have occasionally wielded a bit of wire wool and a paint brush (I claim the port main undercarriage bay, starboard upper wing root, canopy and tailcone!). Sadly haven't really been actively involved for ages though.

Wire wool? You're not serious?

Yep - to get rid of thick paint on areas that were going to repainted as a temporary fix (due to be entirely reskinned at a later date - all since done). Some of the RAF-applied paint was waaay thicker than the metal itself.

655 is a lovely plane

The power run day I attended a few years ago she belted up the runway on high power, t'driver bloke CUT the engines and lifted the nose and I swear she'd have taken off and flown round just by instinct if he hadn't been very careful

I love her (even more than 558) eek

Just a little reminder that this sunday its XL426 25th anniversary at Southend.

25 Years at Southend Open Day
We are celebrating the 25th anniversary of Vulcan XL426's arrival at Southend Airport at our 25 Years at Southend Open Day on Sunday 25 September.

Visitors to our 25 Years at Southend Open Day will be able to walk round Vulcan XL426 and and climb inside the bomber's cramped five-man cockpit.

Admission is £2.00 with under-16s free if accompanied by an adult. Cockpit visits cost an extra £2.50 for all ages. Admission for Vulcan Restoration Trust members, including cockpit visits, is free. Gates open at 10.00 a.m. and last entry is at 5.00 p.m.

The new Southend Airport station, just two minutes from the Vulcan, is now open and is the easiest and most convenient way to reach the airport, with regular services on the London Liverpool Street to Southend Victoria line. We will do whatever we can to provide free parking for visitors arriving by car. However, space for free parking is very limited and visitors should be prepared to use the airport or station car parks, for which there is a charge.

The 25 Years at Southend Open Day will also feature a display of historic military vehicles.

The Lancaster Bar and Resturarant, next to the entrance gate to the 25 Years at Southend Open Day will be open all day to Vulcan visitors for meals, light refreshments, drinks and teas and coffees. The Lancaster has a licensed bar.

A wide selection of gifts will be on sale from the VRT stand. We carry a wide range of Vulcan souvenirs and memorabilia, with something to suit all ages, tastes and pockets! Our range includes: books, DVDs, greetings cards, maagazines, Vulcan models, greetings cards, pens, pencils, sweatshirts, polo shirts, photos, flown souvenir covers and lots more. A selection of our souvenirs is also available to purchase on-line at http://shop.avrovulcan.com .

Please note that due to airport regulations we cannot admit any dogs or pets to the Open Day, with the exception of assistance dogs.

Vulcan XL426 was flown into Southend Airport on 19 December 1986 following her retirement from the Royal Air Force. Plans to return XL426 to the air as a civilian display aircraft fell through and, in 1993, ownership of XL426 transferred to the Vulcan Restoration Trust. We have maintained XL426 in live, engine running condition since the mid-1990s and carry out regular engine runs as part of our ongoing restoration programme. We had hoped to feature a low-speed Vulcan taxy run as part of the 25 Years at Southend Open Day. However, repair work to the airport taxyway leading to XL426's parking pan means the aircraft is currently 'land locked' and unable to move off the pan. The format of the Open Day will, therefore, follow that of our highly popular Visit the Vulcan Days.

Anyone received the favorite video email from the vulcan trust?

My vote had to go to the aborted landing at RNAS Yeovilton with the sheep pegging it across the field!!

I was there at Yeovilton for 'that' aborted landing. It was something to behold. A Vulcan on full power passing just a few metres over your head is a truly awesome exerience, not to mention the probable permanent ear damage! biggrin

Ah, "The Parting of the Sheep" - one was killed, unfortunately, and 558 wore a sheep kill marking on one the nose gear doors for a while.

In the hi res original you can see that it wasn't just sheep running - three people are running too (two at far left, one in pink hat more central), and one is preparing to. One has fallen over backwards in his little picnic chair thingy too (centre, green chair). A quality moment all in all.

I must be in the pic. I wasn't running though! Don't suppose you could send me a copy of the hi-res version could you?
