I cycled up to the fence at Eelmoor bridge this afternoon
Were you wearing a PH jersey? I left Eelmoor bridge just after the Vulcan and cycled along the canal towards Fleet, if it was you, you kindly stopped to let me pass, thought I recognised the logo as I passed then realised it was a PH jersey!
That sounds like me. Black MTB, small black rucksack, PH jersey, in no particular hurry as I knew I'd missed the Vulcan, which I'd hoped to see. Happy to stop for oncoming 'traffic' if I have the better/wider 'passing place' along the canal path.

Poor discipline and a lack of preparation meant I left home a bit late, and had to watch the Vulcan from the Southwood estate. I stopped at the fence for a couple of hours, saw a few validations, along with some "interesting" aircraft arriving/departing (including the 'Shadow'). The shame of it was that they 'switched ends' as I arrived, so all the subsequent arrivals came in over The Swan. I was envious of those who'd had two bites of the cherry with the Vulcan landing at the Eelmoor end. Later in the afternoon, I got bored waiting for something to happen, so buggered off to the top of Caesar's Camp for a mosey at whatever the hell the white 'thing' at the top was...

...it's an 'Electro Optical tracking System' operated by QinetiQ, apparently. There are a pair of them up there, with temporary fencing around them, and their crews in motorhomes. They are spookily accurate when tracking a flying display wink

The view from the tracking unit's site...

...brilliant view, just a shame it's too far out to be of any real use to watch the flying display with the Mk1 eyeball.

I was on the way back toward the airfield later, when the Connie took off, and I caught a glimpse of it above the trees. Better discipline and preparation is needed later this week to ensure I get down there in time for the programmed flying displays, although at the moment I'm hiding from the sun with a severe case of 'lobsteritis' after a hot and sunny daytrip to Studland/Swanage on Saturday rolleyes

If anyone is in the Farnborough area, you can listen in to Farnborough Airshow Radio on 106.8 FM.

That's funny. The line up was on the site late last week, they seem to have removed it.

Anyway, I shall be going with camera and huge lens so I should hopefully have pics tomorrow evening!

Edited to add this......official PDF thing that wasn't there last week http://www.farnborough.com/files/siteplanschedulet...

I am fairly certain that it departed Fairford once the flying displays had been completed. It was well hidden - as were the B52's that were supposed to be a static display!!!!

I think they are now Stealth B52's.......
B52s returned home a couple of weeks ago, they were never scheduled to be at RIAT.

I did go up there and saw them and the B2s. The sight of a pair of smoky old B52s doing missed approaches was quite something smile

I was there today, beautiful day but such a shame so few aircraft were flying! It really is poor relation to the flying display it once was. Going on Saturday so hope it's a lot better - I can't really complain as I go for free but I also used to go in the 80/90s and it was brilliant then.

The Farnborough Aishow has not been shown on TV for well over ten years.

In the 1960s to 80, BBC used to have a half hour nightly report (like they do today for the Chelsea Flower Show) with an hour long review on Sunday.

How times have changed.

Alternatively, there is now several hours of high quality video on YouTube that you can display on your television.

That is true - the world is indeed changing.

What is missing from yoytube type footage of course is informed comment and context - and (mostly) a professional and slick packaging of the images into a proper" programme" or report.

The problem with all computer hosted footage of anything is that it needs to be sought out and found by interested parties. Mainstream TV is still a much broader way of reaching new audiences and sparking new interest - and creating genuine awareness of any subject.

I miss him a lot. With the passing of that generation, a level of intelligent and informed comment was lost forever.

Just imagine, a commentary from someone who didn't even get a media studies degree because he was too busy flying Spitfires in combat. Unthinkable nowadays.

Fantastic, thanks for the video link. I'm listening to airshow radio as well so get the commentary too. They aren't quite in sync but it doesn't matter too much for this type of event.

What's with the D-Day landing stripes and old roundels on the Eurofighter, are we invading France again? hehe

That was sarcasm by the way.
