They've known what it sounds like since it started sea trials. Subs are stealthy, and passive sonar can hear over long distances.
That was the point I was trying to make. There is very little if anything to be learnt by watching or listening to ships entering or leaving Portsmouth Harbour that isn't either in the public domain, or already known by those who want to know.Sitting outside the Still And West with a beer watching the comings and goings is a nice way to spend a sunny afternoon though.

Bit of a side question - how do you find out ahead of time when one of the aircraft carriers/ type 45’s/ frigates is either coming in or out of Portsmouth? For example POW departed Portsmouth today and I would love to travel down one day and watch, is there any advance notification available?
Heads up, HMS PWLS is due back in tomorrow afternoon around 3:30. (Scheduled return, no dramas.)Cold said:

Vanguard was a good ship, too good for scrap but totally obsolete. I wish they’d kept her as a museum ship, even better would have been to save an actual ‘war hero’ KGV, Nelson, warspite or revenge class. I can’t imagine the scrap value of any of these amounted to much? Very short sighted, maybe we as a nation were just totally sick of war and wanted to move on?
HMS Belfast was in action in WW2(with distinction at the Battle of the North Cape against Scharnhorst) and Korea? Preserving old ships is pretty expensive and the bigger they are the more it is.hidetheelephants said:

Indeed she did serve with distinction but was a very small ship compared to the RN capital ships, I’d love to have seen a KGV or Nelson in the flesh. Totally get the point with the expense, didn’t really consider that.
I'd like to have seen one of the capital ships preserved too - but the reality is that the UK hasn't done a bad job of preserving representative examples of warships from most eras from the Tudor period onward. As HTE says, preserving ships is expensive and preserving big ships is very expensive - and also crucially the supply of people prepared to pay more than a nominal amount to visit them is limited - Thorpe Park or Alton Towers is perceived to be and maybe actually is a better family day out.

Some interesting shenanigans going on today on deck of the PoW.A Wildcat hovering in the centreline at various distances, while a Qinetic ‘lab’ sea container on deck bristling with antennae does it’s thing. There are also 3 jet powered target drones in stands, one of which has just cycled its engines. Also, they’ve just wheeled out half a Harrier. Looks like it might be used for extraction training or some such time killing stuff while they fix the carrier again!

From Twitter you can spot the harrier cockpit to the right. https://twitter.com/AmzJS13/status/143306013467937...
Love having the Navy as a neighbour, always something going on. I know there have been a few vocal people in the local rag whining when a carrier is running at night, but I really can’t get my head around the mindset of somebody who moves into a property next to an active Navy base, then whinges about their activities.
