This might sound a stupid question, but at the end of the ramp are railings. Are these just for when the ship is in port or are they just removed for launching planes?
Probably just temporary during construction due to H&S regs.

Hmm, not exactly a "Beauty" now is she............ Somehow manages to look like a supersized Tug?

(i bet the stability calcs were fun too, what with all those bits sticking off the sides ;-)

Looks like Lego. Did they only have an Etch-a-Sketch to draw it up?

It's stealth innit. All modern ships look like they're made from cardboard, and probably are.

Would a compressed air catapult not be a cheap ish solution?

No steam, no massive electric draw except to run the air compressor.
Well yes you could but it's going to need a heck of a lot pumping back up to launch a F35 complete with full load. Hydraulic rams are the other solution but you still need the motive power to load the system ready for use.

They should go for an MGU-H, MGU-K and KERS based F1 system of energy recovery to power the catapult system, I mean just imagine the power recovered from all the daily flushes hehe

Just replace the deck with a treadmill. Plane lands, hits arrestor wire, entire deck jerks forwards, launches waiting plane into air with same speed as arriving one. Simple conservation of momentum.........

(assuming same plane masses and no friction etc)

I think she looks pretty mean and purposeful, which is a good thing in a warship! More threatening when she parks off the enemy's coast. wink

How about a tow plane to help get your fighters into the air?

A dirty great big crossbow type launcher cranked by a small electric winding motor could work but doesn't give you the stuff for the arrestor system. So we would be back to rope and sand bags to slow down your billion dollar aircraft.

In still think a RATO sled would be worth looking at as you could adapt the sled for drones etc although it would make discreet night opps somewhat difficult.
Arrester wires are a bit cleverer than that. There's nothing about carrier operations that comes under the category 'discreet'; less Teddy Roosevelt and more 'Carry a big stick and wear big clompy boots just in case the fuzzywuzzies don't get the message'

Looks like they have moved the old Polaris boats that were stored roughy where the carrier is now moored?

Is the SSN behind tem Dreadnought? She's been out of service linger than she was in. Great to see naval history side by side.

Sad to see they cut the fin off Dreadnought. She or Conqueror should have been preserved instead of the SSN at GUZZ.
