Just a larger than normal meteor. This one lasted about 3 seconds.

Must have been what I saw. Properly spectacular, even had time to shout "Look at that"! (was in a group of people)

If you're in the S35 area I launched 2 Chinese lanterns and a stack of rockets around that time biggrin

I saw a proper fireball over the Peak District about 10 years ago: lasted about 5 or 6 seconds and broke into several pieces. Turned out loads of people also saw it. Estimated the size of a football and ending up in the North Sea.

About 6 miles. I used to work there once.

Wind was NW tonight though, so wrong direction for Oughtibridge!

I might have seen the same one also about 10 years ago except I was somewhere near Newcastle upon Tyne. It was exactly as you describe and was also heading towards the North Sea.

It was 8th February 2001. I reported it to whoever you're supposed to report these things to, and IIRC they estimated from reports over the country it had entered the atmosphere over mid Wales, tracked over the Peak District and then the North Sea, so it could have been the same one. It was a spectacular sight.

The date sounds about right although I can't be sure. However the time would have been around 6pm as I was on my way to the pub with some colleaues for our tea so it certainly fits with when it would have been dark.

I emailed my sighting to some chap at a research place who said they'd recieved lots of reports.

Yep, the time sounds about right - I was out mountain biking at the time, so it would have been early evening.
