Just been out in the garden having a ciggie, as you do, & watched in awe, shock, horror, as a Hercules flew over my house at not much more than 100 foot above tree top level.

It banked around the front, sort of, & then climbed away climbing steeply.

Very odd as not seen one that low in daylight before let alone at this time of night. Neighbour, also having a smoke, simply said over the fence 'what the fk was that?'

Told him it was a Fat Albert. He had no clue what I was on about so told him to google Fat Albert. Just hope it doesn't bring up any 'odd' Internet links........

On the subject of Fat Alberts one of them did a cracking low level pass up the River Dart during the Regatta over the weekend.

A great sight as were the Red Arrows, the BBMF, the Sea Fury & the Black Cat helicopter display team.

Also the Tornado's were awesome on their two low level passes. What a noise!

I'm at the back edge of Kempsey (outskirts of Worcester) and have nothing but fields between us and the motorway, we regularly get Hercs (and others) at very low level across the fields behind us..

Now I'm off to Google for the FA reference... I'm scared..

Off topic, completely, but it seems a little pertinent.

What sort of plane is this one?

Heard what I thought was a lorry on the other side of the lake, looked over and saw a bloody large plane. Was very quiet though,so I presume it'snot a normal one.

I'm on the outskirts of Gloucester - get helicopters hedge hoping around here every now & then but haven't seen a plane that low around here before, even during the day.

I was a little worried tbh.

It's a stretched J Model Hercules - ie a CMk4 - as evidenced by the longer fuselage and lack of External (underwing) tanks.

When they were at Lyneham we used to get them flying low over Bath all the time, following the river along the valley. Very impressive quite how hard they could be chucked around.

Fat Albert is a nickname. Perhaps if you had told your neighnbours it was a Hercules they might have understood better.

Low flying Herks are not that unusual around the Salisbury Plain area. I was on a camp site near Lacock a few weeks ago and we had some fantastic beat ups over the few days we were there. Earlier this year I was at Dartmouth and a Hercules did two low flypasts over the Naval College.

It wouldnt have made any difference to my neighbour - he wouldnt know what a Hercules was if it bit him on the ass so it made no difference whatever i said to him.

The low pass at Dartmouth Regatta last week was wonderful. My 7 year old son thought it was best thing he had seen - until he saw the Tornado's fly past a little later.

& then we got on board HMS St Albans & he got into the Merlin that was parked at the back of the ship. He loved that even though the pilot said he shouldnt really let him get in the helicopter. Fair play to the pilot for turning a blind eye even though he lifted him up into the cockpit of the Merlin!!!

My lad hasnt however, yet, seen 558 fly so that is the next thing for him to experience.

He also thought that the BBMF was good, the Sea Fury was cool & the Red Arrows were awesome so he is learning fast!!

Sounds like you have a very intelligent and discerning young lad there.

Here's another few aircraft that have been called Hercules -

De Havilland DH66 Hercules

Hughes H4 Hercules

He likes his planes & he loves cars as well - just like me - much to his mums irritation.

Off to Silverstone next week for the Ferrari Racing Days event & i'm on the Vulcan website as well to see the closest demo of 558 to home here in Gloucester as seeing 558 is one thing he must experience before she stops flying.

I suspect that the same ones fly over us in Dumbleton about 5 minutes before they get to you. They always seem to be heading in that direction.

They are surprisingly quiet for the size. We've lost ours now at Lyneham but noise was never an issue.

Not so impressive when you're inside one with all your kit on, just praying the pilot hurries up and gets to the DZ before the back turns into a horrible airsick mess.

Its a blessed relief to get out of the door into the slipstream after Biggles in the front office has been strutting his/her stuff.

More like when the 'Self Loading Freight' (Nav) has called: "Two Minutes" (and you lot all stand up), ten minutes before He/She turns the red light on, and we can all go home in time for tea and medals! wink
