Recent convert to Aldi shopping. Its definitely a lot cheaper than a lot of places. Sometimes wonder if they scan so fast they miss stuff because it ends up even cheaper than I'm expecting.
Aldi and Lidl have the barcode on each surface of the packaging. The check out person doesn't have to look for the barcode, because whichever surface is passed over the scanner, it will activate.

Why don't the other supermarkets do the same? It isn't exactly Brain of Britain stuff, is it?
no idea but i really wish they should do it on their own-brand packaging.

Are supermarkets allowed to sell things that are past the use by dates?
Strictly speaking, no. BBE dates are questionable.
I seem to recall an article, maybe on ‘Food Unwrapped’, that bagged salads particularly can be rife with bacteria.. I would steer clear personally!
Listeria I think along with cooked rice

Has anyone tried Aldi’s “Jammy red” wine yet?
My wife is rather partial to “Jam shed” red, so she’s grabbed a bottle to try at some point.
To make your own jammy wine, simply pour some cheap red plonk into a glass, add a half teaspoon of sugar, stir, et voila! Jamshed!

...Anyone else tried Aldi's new Gastropub chilled meal range?

Just tried the butter chicken curry and it's seriously very good indeed. I'd say it's a level above M&S and a lot cheaper - £3.89 for a generous 2 person portion.

The fish pie is excellent too.

I wil be heading back to try some of the other offerings in the range.lick

I like the chilled jalfrezi and the larger 800g lasagne al forno. jalfrezi is pretty popular among people here although it seems to be one of the ones that isnt stocked as much as the others.

I have the Jalfrezi in the fridge for tonight, IMHO it is the best supermarket curry ever, and yes, they only put one of them in a box with the others.

Same, I think it's brilliant. I wouldn't be upset being served it in a restaurant.

The two step jars of curry sauce are decent as well. They are about 1.50 and good for two servings.

The chilli ratings are accurate as well. So often supermarket stuff has 3 chilli's and isn't remotely hot m. I'm not a heat fiend either.

Interesting, never knew that. They are lightening quick at scanning and I have to put my stuff and plonk it on a shelf to give myself time to bag it.

I don't care how fast they put the stuff through: I pay when I'm ready.

I stopped shopping at my local Aldi as all the old buggers had the same attitude, always took ages at the till. They’ve opened some self service ones now so it’s much better.

I'm as fast as they are, I put my two large IKEA style bags in my trolley with the tops folded back to keep them rigid and open and stuff goes into the bags as soon as they've ttted it to me, usually grabbing it before they've hardly even let go. I don't need to use the shelf to go and pack. Last time I mentioned this in here I was torn a new ahole by people who just couldn't understand or comprehend that I could keep up, apparently I'm delaying things, holding people up, but two huge great open bags are no different to putting stuff into an empty trolley. No faffing with a card or phone or watch to pay either, my ring is contactless.

I AM THE FASTEST PACKING CUSTOMER BY A COUNTRY MILE. I'M LIKE BISHOP IN THE KNIFE SCENE IN ALIEN, SO THE NAYSAYERS CAN STFU THIS TIME!

Yes brother. I'm with you on this... get in - get out - don't fk-about.

Thats what I've always liked about Aldi.

I went into Tesco before christmas for something specific... talk about dilly-dallying.. and tting about banghead

Old Dorris at the checkout started some inane conversation about driving at night, and then started sniffing my bread loaf!!... just scan it and let me escape ffs.

  • If you arrange your items on the conveyor belt - in size / frozen / fragile.. saves everyone alot of time. + get all your -20% red labels through at the start.

... I have a confession. I learned the hard way:

Once (and only once) I didn't check I had my wallet with me, only dawned on me once every item had been scanned. boxedin Absolute rooky mistake.

I had to leg-it to the carpark and get my wallet and run back. 'If looks could kill'!

Hence I don't mess around in Aldi anymore - I treat it like an army maneuver.

Agreed. My only gripe is that I can't believe 21st Century Man is quicker than me. I use his technique but I operate at the speed of light.

Never ever has any Aldi checkout wallah managed to scan faster than I can pack.
It's personal.
