what's the breakfast option with the bits of sausage & mushroom in? i used to love that stuff. i was in the RNR and was one of the only people to love that, corned beef hash and biscuits brown. i'd end up with everyone elses and be a very full and happy chappy.

We once decided to leave the rat packs at camp and went on a two week exercise where we decided to eat nothing but pork products and drink only tea (no water)!

My arse stank!

I was an army brat growing up in Germany and it was always a highlight when my dad brought home some "mystery tins" of compo. Unlabelled with no writing on the tin. I'd be hoping for chocolate or boiled sweets (although it seemed soooo wrong to open a tin and find those!) Usually turned out to be some kind of mystery meat though. The dog seemed to like it.

Just a guess i would probably say 3000 Kcal
IIRC the rat. pack is supposed to give double the daily recommended calorie intake, due to the increased exertion being in the field, so about 5-6000Kcal if you eat everything.

That comes about 2-3 days after endex - get to the bogs first or you'll be in an Andrex-less world of hurt.

I always dreaded getting landed with treacle pudding... the hardest thing in NATO. I experimented once with boiling it for half an hour to see if it would soften up. No, no it didn't.

Been there etc. My first experience was in the Gen of Immal. One of my Cadet Class mates bought up the unedible tins of spam ( before it was an IT word ). We thought he was insane until we discovered his family had a hotel in K***y where Spam became the meat of choice on Sunday nights, as in you had no choice. Still in my mans army C rations were best.
In 3 weeks time I'll be trying to recreate the experience in Bleu Nord camping with Denis, Chris and Mel, and maybe Neil Lane.

yumm rat packs

eat a lot of these on expeditions- light weight, easy to cook, etc etc- also keep 5 days in the back of the truck to help in emergencies.

New ones are far superior to the old- chocolate if s bit funny, but it says yorkie ont eh wrapper so whats not to like. They have just bought out a lolad of new menus which are quite a bit more interesting than the old.

Stories of guys in Afghanistan liing on them for months at a time which wouldn't be a lot of fun.

Definitely made especially for rat packs too as, instead of 'not for girls' like the ones you can buy at home do, the ones in the rat packs have 'not for civvies'. Not sure whether that means not available for or not advised for! wink

That's for wiping your arse although if you've eaten any biscuits brown you won't have that concern for at least several days.

There were no need on our OTC exercises: we had several absolutely stunning women in the unit and there was none of this single sex basha-ing up from cadets going on. Girls/guys used to change in front of each other no problem, and there are a few funny stories involving CWSs. Any ideas that may have entered any of our heads were cunningly dealt with by the RSM using the technique of "i'm going to rag you so hard for this exercise you won't be able to stand at the end of every day, let along contemplating fcensoreding anyone"
