Talking of costs.

Have they tinned tomatoes always cost around the 90p/£1 mark or have I just been ignorant?

I watched a 4 pack pass through the checkout and come up £3.96. I'd have got more for my money in the alcohol aisle.
Two or three years ago, tins of tomatoes were around 35p-50p a tin — but then there was some sort of crop failure & prices of tinned tomatoes, tomato puree etc. rocketed. Call me cynical but I have noticed that the tins which cost almost £4 per 4 are quite often on 'special offer half price'.........
Much cheaper in Lidl

Melvin - cartons are the way forward. They are square and stack much better in the cupboards.
Do they last longer than the tinned variety as about twice a year I have to throw away half a dozen, what looks like tinned pea-green cheesecake affairs?
The use-by date is about a year away.

79p for cartons, 55p each for tins (bought as a 4 pack) in Waitrose. Doubtless cheaper elsewhere.

Used to check the reduced (non chilled) shelf in my local Tesco (good source of bargain hard and soft drinks). For years they had bashed cans of tomatoes on offer.

One week I actually wanted a can of tomatoes from there. None in sight of course. irked

I adore tinned toms. If i use less than a tin in anything, add a splash of worcester sauce and scoff with a spoon right out the tin cloud9
