My local still had a few in this morning so I got some more. They had the 750ml bottles of Leffe in for £2.49 so a couple of bottles of that made its way into the trolley!

Some Lidl shops seem to have been revamped. Two by me have been closed and reopened much bigger with different layouts. It's not unlike upper-end stores in there now, it's a much nicer experience than Aldi.
A new Aldi and a new Lidl opened up brand new stores opposite each other in my town in my town earlier this year. The difference is astonishing.

Not only does the Lidl have the in-store bakery that Aldi have nothing to compete with, but the Lidl has normal supermarket checkouts and self-scan tills.

The self-scan tills means it is no longer a pain to try and buy a few items and not end up behind several people with overflowing trolleys (I know some people will offer to let you jump in front if you have a couple of items, but with a basket full that isn't really on).

As a result my spending in Lidl has shot up by a huge amount, but I rarely set foot in the Aldi on the other side of the road.

Exactly the in the town local to me (opened in April). I admit I'm now preferring to shop in Aldi (there's a B&M in the same car park that's handy for certain items) and the Lidl is opposite with the huge bakery selection and self-scan. However I do find that in the evening there aren't any manned checkouts open. Bit of a pain when you have a trolley full. I find the self-scan often needs resetting or alcohol authorising, I also pick up 30% discounted stuff for the freezer, this needs authorisation. Must be just as frustrating for the staff running around.

On the subject of the discounted lines I picked up a Pork Crackling joint on offer and then an extra 30% off. Still had four days on the date too. Had it tonight, crackling was great, shredded the meat and mixed in a Beer BBQ Aldi sauce served in their Cheese topped buns. Was lovely. Considering we don't have Pork the kids loved it.

Anyone else notice this happening much more in Aldi/Lidl?

Has happened to me several times and I make a point of doing the same.

Never, ever experienced it in Sainsburys or anywhere else?

Better class of people in Aldi/Lidl?

It looks like the company wide self-scan policy for Lidl is to only open a manned checkout once the queue for the self scan gets to a certain level.

The staff members supervising the self checkouts seem to be more willing than at other shops to help scan (or even just scan the whole basket) for people who aren't confident.

I think they are stuck with the manual 30% discount processing as a lot of their own brand packaging has massive barcodes printed on them that would be impossible to put a new barcode sticker over.

And this is a great example of discounters showing that they are innovators, not just in it to grab other people's R&D.

Those huge barcodes are amazing; they make self-scanning so slick as the laser is never hunting for the tiny barcode which, often, get caught in the packaging folds.

Sounds like Stirling - Aldi, B&M and a new Lidl within 100 yards of each other!

Sweet chilli chicken breasts, battered onion rings & sweet potato oven chips. Had them with a fresh salad yesterday, al fresco, and they were bloody lovely.

Hey Toro Loco fans... I know we all covet (and miss!) the original black label... the white label is quite 'cheap' and the other special editions (Organic etc) have all been underwhelming.

Well, I found this in the booze special offers area. Only available in half bottles (but it was only £1.99 or £2.99 - can't remember) and it is... deeeeelicious!

If there is a Pets at Home next door to B&M we are in the same town.

And when the manned checkouts are open those staff have to cover the self-scan so are constantly jumping up and down from the till to do the authorisation.

Cheap, quality products, high levels of customer service.

As with many things in life: pick two.
