The Real Ale thread
Discussion
You drink a third or quarter litre, we drink a half or full pint it's totally different (that's why we need weaker beers)
Real (British) ale is the stuff that is NOT advertised on TV usually in Britain
Proper beer in proper pubs is handpulled or servered straight out of the barrel "on gravity"
DO NOT mistake the shite most pubs, clubs and bars in Britain served for real ale
We have fantastic beers in Britain

i visited Southwold recently and got to see the home of some truly, mighty fine Ales,
I grew up about 10 miles from Southwold, accordingly I rate Adnams Bitter (just the regular bitter) the finest ale on the planet. However, I understand I may be biased ... Sadly it doesn't travel at all well - you can get it in London but its a shadow of its former self. I won't drink it more than about 25 miles from Southwold.

What should I drink in the Ace Cafe?
go up to the bar and have a look for some of these Al traditional handpumps that dispense Real Ale (any other tap style dispensers you see will be serving gassy keg/replica indigent beverages, avoid!)
if the Ace has some handpulls (i don't know if they do TBH) i expect a large brewer like Greene King might be supplying the beer, IPA and Abbott will be the 2 main ones, by all means try them, but if they have any unusual (usually regional micro brewed stuff as a guest) offerings perhaps a seasonal, get some of that down yer too!
enjoy Al, i think you'll very much like it!
just found this place
http://www.beersofeurope.co.uk/acatalog/
Tried a bottle of Kwak last night, not really my cup of tea tasted a bit like off milk
Few others tried last night
1st 2 were last one was abit too light for my tastes

I'm surprised you didn't like Kwak if you liked the othersKwak has it's own very special glass that looks like a dwarf half-yard of ale and test-tube looking wooden handle/holder
IIRC Kwak is on draught at the Harboro' Hotel, Melton Mowbray
Just remember only Bottled Conditioned British beer is considered real ale (see name of thread ) so pour it slowly and carefully if you don't want to disturb the sediment at the bottom
Matt, I'm told the Food Hall in St. Giles Street sells (local) B/C beers

I'd assume that the know what they're doing down the Malt Shovel regarding pouring of beer from bottles
Do keep up Nigel, the food hall place was the one I told you about that sells most of the Northamptonshire beers

Sorry Matt, I forget, it's me ageNext time you're in the Malt tell them you prefer draught Kwak (as above)
Anyone been in the Monkeys Head yet? Worth a try as it's just back from The Racehorse
Yeap that's the one, I had to take Mrs Beer out last night so we tried there - worth a look
Run by Simon (from Vitoria, Poole St.) and his partner, has 8 handpumps and a couple of keg multi-fonts
Could suit youngsters like you and your crew (altho' Simon said it's mixed clientele) and it's open to at least 1am sometimes 4am
The Racehorse has extended its beer festival as competition

for any Cambs based Real beer drinkers here the multiple Hunts CAMRA pub of the year award winning Chequers in Little Gransden should be one of your main ports of call now (if it isn't already!)the Son Of Sid brewery (first in the county in over 20+ years!) is fully operational now and many unique Ales of all styles and strengths can be found available here and the quality is excellent too!
