Not a bad dram Talisker, not bad at all. The cask strength expression 57 North is darned decent . The king of them all though, before silly money starts to be asked, is the 18, a wonderfull drop of stuff, consistent, complex and flavoursome. Certainly one to try , especially if its on the shelf in a whisky bar.

22 for that is very cheap!

I have sampled it before, really really smokey!
Meh. It's not a patch on anything actually smokey. Someone should take whoever blends this st to Islay for a weekend.
Gave a whisky beginner friend if mine an Ardbeg alligator on Friday as he wanted to try something a bit more interesting. So called because Ardbeg fired the inside of the cask till it blackened and cracked looking a bit like an alligator skin pattern. Let's just say it's a little smokey. He wasn't quite ready for it!

Caol Ila Distillers Edition, VERY heavily peated and goes down far too well!

Just recovered from standing on my head whilst reading the label on Lefty's wonderful sherry monster - special.

Returned tonight to the last of the bottle of Elijah Craig 18yo. Always a special dram but the lower you get into the bottle the more it tastes like a good quality rum. Somewhere between Pussers cask strength and Eldorado 15yo. In fact - the last drams have been the best - shame its gone and no longer available.

Not a fan of JW normally, not fit to swill out my hipflask I would say, but giving this a try as only 22 in CostCo tonight.

What did you think?
As per the above.

It was quite nice actually, didn't have that JW usual "tang" that they have, but wasn't anywhere near being actually smokey!

Morning all, I am looking to get a nice bottle of whisky for my Dad's birthday - say up to £40 - £50. He likes strong flavours, particularly Isla malts or ones that have clearly been aged in sherry barrels.

Current "go to" choices for him are Laphroig, Lagavulin, Macallan, Talisker etc.

Any idea on something a bit different to try? I am in Aberdeen and I know there is a specialist whisky shop somewhere. Failing that, there is a big ASDA hehe

Cheers smile

On holiday in Cornwall in a lovely farmhouse - bought supplies but seem they to have taken a bit of a hammering.
Opened and finished a bottle of 'The Laddie Ten'. Not really had any Bruichladdich before and if you are not keen on the full on Islay hit that Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Lagavulin gives - then this is perfect !
Nicely balanced with I think enough peat smoke and as my wife says TCP !
The next bottle on the list this week is a Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban, a old favourite which I know I'll enjoy !
Cheers all !

I'm not really into Peaty whisky, but in the bar I work out we sell Bruichladdich Port Charlotte, which is heavily peated and quite popular.

See if you can lay hands on a bottle of Bowmore Tempest, enormous citrus bomb , with typical Islay peaty/smokey ness.

If not , see if a lagavulin 12 presents itself, or indeed, if Tali is to taste, a bottle of Talisker 57 north if he has not tried them (both a bit more than budget) if none of these there is always Caol Ila 12 as a back stop.

I've got a bottle of that - made in the style of the now defunct Port Charlotte distillery. It's lovely.

How about Ardbeg? I bought a bottle recently (am a big fan of Laphroaig and the other peaty whiskys) and it's nice. Very smokey and was £41.

Have you been to Constantine Stores ? If not - Google and put the postcode in your SatNav.
Its been a while since I went (and in fact the Elijah Craig 18yo I've just finished was from there). Hidden behind the counter are a few sample bottles if you get talking for long enough.

I got a bit of a shock first time I popped in there, from the outside it just looks like a village store, but down the back, wow! I went in to grab an Ardbeg, a few samples later and I was a few hundred quid lighter!

Afternoon all, thought I would give you a quick update. Went to the local whisky shop which actually had an excellent selection and was reasonably priced. Sadly they didn't have the Port Charlotte stuff, but they did have this which relieved me of £46:

It came on the recommendation of the guy in the shop who really knew his stuff. I chose it because it is quite a rare one and I have never seen it in any supermarket. My Dad has been very keen on whisky for years and years so I thought I would get him something that he hopefully hasn't seen before. They had the Bowmore Tempast as well, but my local ASDA has it too. Might pick up a bottle for myself when pay day comes around...

Anyway, we will break it open on Saturday so I will let you know how I get on.

Interested to know what you think of it. Wasn't as sweet as I was expected, given the Pedro Ximenez.

Caught up with a well known Whisky expert the other day.

He's said this is something to watch out for, not a nice price though.
