Yes indeed, fair point. It was the Woodford Reserve post which got me excited.

However, it will probably get a better reception here than in "the other thread". biggrin
iknorite. We need a Tennessee mash thread, a corn whiskey thread... probably an irish whiskey thread for good measure... there are probs a few more!

Bit of a thread resurrection but I couldn't find anything more recent!

Eagles Rare on Amazon deal of the day for £20! My absolute favourite, have managed to get a couple of bottles lick

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Eagle-Rare-Year-Bourbon-W...

Highly recommended, and a touch over half the usual price.

Few Black Friday deals around - Blanton's Special Reserve and Eagles Rare on Amazon for a combined £70. I've bought both for less in the past, but it's still a good deal compared to elsewhere.

Out of interest, has anyone tried anything from Elijah Craig or Four Roses? I'm pretty comfortable with the Buffalo Trace distillery now and would like to branch out, but last time I ended up with a bottle of Basil Hayden's bourbon which was a tad underwhelming for the price.

Elijah Craig 12 is great, very oaky. You can get it in m&s and maybe Waitrose too. Four roses I’ve only had the yellow label, it was ok at the £25 price point but nothing amazing, I’m not sure if Asda still stock it.

Anyone who is a fan of rye bourbons should have a try of Knob Creek Rye: https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/27154/knob-cre...

Really nice stuff.

Also try Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye. Not a bourbon, but a Canadian Whisky. Generally massively overpriced in this country because it won a world whisky of the year award last year and it is not widely imported. If you have friends or rellys in Canada or know someone going there, ask them to get you a bottle.

Elijah Craig is well worth trying.
I've had the 12 and the Small Batch 1789.

Standard Four Roses (yellow label) is OK if it's on £15 or in a cocktail, but it's not great at full price. However the Single Barrel or Small Batch are worth trying, epecially if they come on offer.

I managed to get a Bulleit Rye for £19 from Amazon last night. (I know it's not a Bourbon before anyone starts!). biggrin

They've currently got Woodford Reserve on at £18.75 and a couple of Jim Beams on offer.

I keep meaning to try the Bulleit Rye, I'll get round to it one of these days. The Bulleit Bourbon is one of, if not the best at its price point IMHO.

Other Rye's I'd recomend are Whistlepig and High West Rendezvous Rye.

I've been trying for ages to gain a bottle Of Old Rip Van Winkle 10, looks like the speculaters have got a hold of it, as they have with all too many Malt scotches. Grrrr!

I have just opted to get this for my mate :

Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Bourbon 70cl - http://amzn.to/2ASuVq5

Did I make a good choice? He's a sparky in theatres and he's been a massive help re wiring parts of my flat to put in 240v LEDs. I think I should maybe have upped the budget a little bit, but I don't know what to!

Don't know that one. I've forwarded to the OH as a not-at-all-subtle hint for Christmas hehe

Does anyone have any thoughts on what bourbon works best for an old fashioned?
I grabbed a bottle of Maker's Mark 46 because it was on lightning deal and already tried the obvious jd/jb/mm.
Not really sure what element makes a bourbon good in a cocktail really.

I tend to use Buffalo Trace, anything more expensive I feel guilty for mixing sugar and bitters into hehe

That said, I had a decent one in a bar a while ago that used a mix of Bulleit bourbon and Rittenhouse Rye...

Anything with a bit of Rye in it works well I think. Rittenhouse Rye in a Manhattan for instance.

But in an Old Fashioned you've got that much other stuff going in that I would use whatever I wanted to get rid of!
biggrin
(Bit like in a Christmas Cake!).

Keep an eye out for Bulleit Rye on offer. I got some for £20 from Amazon last month.

I was lucky a couple of years ago, right place, right time in Amathus City branch before Pappy went completely nuts. Think it cost me around £80, last time I looked they were going for £600 - madness.

Have thought on more than one occasion since why didn't I buy the 23yo as well which IIRC was £250....

TBH, my son and I did a blind tasting of 4 or 5 bourbons and neither of us picked the RV as our favourite, think it was MM46 for me.

Heads up for anyone with Amazon Prime, there are a few bargains around today. I've long been curious about the Old Forester Kingsman Golden Circle - basically a limited edition released for the Kingsman II film that's normally about fifty quid and seems to review well. £30 today, so I've taken a punt biggrin

OTOH, Blanton's seems to be getting more expensive every time I look frown

Bulleit 10 £33.50 and Rye £22.50, both good prices.

I wasn't keen on Old Forrester. Hope you like it.
