Text out of the blue from my little sister yesterday. She spotted a Balvenie travel exclusive and knew that Mrs Podie and I are big fans. Also, for an extra fiver they'll throw in the Glenfiddichs - did she want me to pick them up? Er... HELL YES!

Your sister has very manly hands.... smile
I came so close to saying the same thing the other day!!
Whereas I was wondering if he had an extra long middle finger to be able to hook around them all like that. Like an aye-aye. biggrin

Been chasing a dose of manflu, which has been the perfect excuse to have the odd dram.

So far, this week's medication has been:

Hammerhead 20yr old
Caol Ila 18yr old
Ardbeg 10yr old
Whisky Castle Oloroso cask - very smooth Swiss whisky
Kavalan
Lammerlaw 10yr old - sadly closed Kiwi distillery
Nikka Coffey Grain - my purchase at the PH tasting night
Safeway's own label 'Lowland' 10yr old - aka Rosebank, and a good one at that!!

A couple of these have been lying around for nearly 20yrs, and are sadly nearly finished and irreplaceable - the Lammerlaw in particular. The Safeway's own one was a bargain at the time, as the labelling hinted that it was Rosebank by the description, and I'd bought 2 or 3 of that bottling.

Sadly I never got the Lag37 ones. It was a bit "too good to be true", since it was being sold for around £900 which was a really wrong price. Just got an email saying the supplier hadn't provided them, so cancelled that part of the order. I'm not sure if there was some kind of error in their system, or if they have realized there was something wrong and will update it with a more realistic price at some point. I wouldn't normally consider paying that much for whisky, but if I had got them then I could have sold one to pay for the other, biggrin

The Laph 1989 is for sale for around £150 here, so it's not cheap to start with. There is still some available, so if anybody wanted I could get it delivered here and send it over for you.

Yes, they didn't seem to make much noise about it at all. I think they were also going to release it in limited quantities in Sweden and Germany.
Thanks for the offer. Very tempting but Laphroaig have done a German only bottling that was put on sale about 8 weeks ago with deliveries commencing in the coming weeks. It is a 24 yo but came in at around 240€ a pop! Needless to say, that one is going into the 'save for later' stash.

I was drinking with the Nikka people last night, nice guys. I think I need to try the Coffey Still.

Ah, how opportune is this thread biggrin

After many many years of a dislike for the noble tipple, I finally seem to be emerging from under my rock.

I haven't been well mind, terrible man flu.

Up until now, that's the only time I've ever consumed it.

But suddenly I find myself actually putting some in a glass & drinking it. Neat.

At the moment, I'm polishing off the last of a long opened bottle of Glenfiddich.

But I have a few bottles that I inherited from my dad.

Some more Glenfiddich, a Special Old Reserve & a 12 Year Old.

A Glenlivet 12 year old & a Macallan 10 year old.

I've had these for 20 years.

I know they are all Single Malts, I know what that means, but not what that means (if you know what I mean).

Are these considered a good tipple? Being a noob on the Scotch front, I don't want to waste them by opening them & thinking "meh".

I'm not over-bowled by the Glenfiddich Special Old Reserve, more intrigued by the fact that I keep going back for more.

Will the 12 year old one be much better?

What should I look for in a Scotch.

Will the aforementioned ones taste the same?

What recommendations for a novice?

What about Whiskey?

Thanks in advance.

smile

They are both good but I prefer the one with the yellow label. Beware, it is VERY drinkable. Having said that, if you have the chance to try some some of the older bottlings from the Coffey still then do.

Just got back from a very good night - young George Wills delivering a very good Kilchoman Landrover Tour tasting. Most entertaining and enthusiastic.

So - 100% Islay was a good start as it delivers the closest experience to the distillery spirit style.
Then Machir Bay and Loch Gorm to complete the standard bottlings.
Something a bit different - the sold out 55% Port Cask - a mixed result. The casks were fresh - the refills they have now become will probably be a little better balanced.
Next a Tour Bottling (only 400 available) - basically a cask strength Machir Bay (order placed).
Finally the current cask strength bottling - a vatting of first fill.

Or should I say - finally - a few extra drams from those previously tasted.
If you can get to one of the upcoming venues in the next few days - on their website - worth going. Not all venues get the same drams - the Port in particular could be substituted at some events.

My wife just called me from Aldi saying the Glen Marnoch 18 is back in stock for £29.99 and would I like a bottle. Does a bear...?

If your local Aldi has it in stock you really should try this. smile

I'm no expert, but can try and answer a bit. They're pretty normal releases. The taste of the whisky will probably be a bit different to the same ones today. One thing to maybe consider is selling them if they're unopened (and in good condition potentially). They would get a bit more due to their age (as in stored for 20 years, not the age on the bottle), despite being a normal release. Maybe some here will not like that, but in my opinion it would give someone an older whisky who wants that style, and may give you a bit more money to use on trying different types of whisky. If they're opened and have been for a long time it will be different, and they're also likely to have got worse in taste due to interaction with the air.

The thing to do is try different styles of whisky to see which (if any!) you like. Have a google to see some of the different styles (Islay, Speyside etc) and try tasting them. You can get small tasting sets, which will be better to start with to find your preference. Generally 10-16 years is pretty normal in age, above that they get a bit more/ massively expensive depending on which one.

She also brought home the 24 year old (last one left in the shop) which is beautifully bottled and packaged at £49.99.

I've read that it's repackaged Dalmore, but there's no real proof of that and I've never tasted Dalmore so wouldn't know. hehe

christ, you'd have thought they'd have made it a bit less conspicuous on the outside of the shipping package! "Massively valuable contents - please do not steal" i presume that says in japanese!!
