okay after much deliberation [okay 5 mins with a brew once i saw the thread just now!] and i'm going with one of my favourite areas of the culinary spectrum - street food.

wikipedia describes street food as "ready-to-eat food or drink sold in a street or other public place, such as a market or fair, by a hawker or vendor, often from a portable stall. While some street foods are regional, many are not, having spread beyond their region of origin. Most street foods are also classed as both finger food and fast food, and are cheaper on average than restaurant meals. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, 2.5 billion people eat street food every day. Street food is intimately connected with take-out, junk food, snacks, and fast food; it is distinguished by its local flavour and by being purchased on the street, without entering any building. Both take-out and fast food are often sold from counters inside buildings."

i describe street food as the best reason for going on holiday.

only rule i will impose is tto stick with wiki's interpretation and ban fast/junk foods [burgers, hot dogs, pizza, kebab etc.].

do one piece for snack or mix up a themed platter for a main meal, choice is yours. have fun!

PS - I don't seem to have a hash sign on my keyboard!

Great idea, but I'm a little confused. You say no hot dogs, but they are street food, sold from carts in the street (in the US at least)...

yeah but they're too obvious and boiling a hotdog doesn't constitute cooking.

i will allow them [aren't i gracious] if some thought and effort has been expended.

Another question.

When are we planning on closing the date for entry's?

I'd like to nominate the 27th as that give me time to do something after I get back of my jollies which I go on tomorrow. Giving 2 full weeks to enter and a week voting will take us upto the end of the month.

Hows that sound. idea

Normally 2 weekends which would make it the 19th (or 20th to allow posting time). I'm going for 5 photos this time too as there was no limit. Food prepared and just about to hit the BBQ.

Souvlaki Pita

I had many holidays in Greece in the 1980's when I lived almost exclusively on these as a lunch time snack. They came in many forms with lamb or pork in either a wrap or pita. This is a lamb pita version

Ingredients

Ready to cook

Lamb on the BBQ

Removed from the skewer to finish

Made up and ready to eat

Handy street food

Simple but tasty - Pity the weather was so poor that I could not use the charcoal BBQ !

I quite fancy balut, a Phillipino street food. Basically a fertilised duck egg boiled about 2 days before it's due to hatch. So basically your own mini duck omlette conveniently wrapped up in a shell.

great tip with the jerk chicken is to soak the chicken for around an hour in a brine/sugar (100g ea) solution before the mariande. It still absorbs the marinade flavour but stops the drying out which can happen with a bbq.

Years ago my brother-in-law went into a promising looking shop on the Edgware Road, thinking he could get this stuff there.

"Have you got any Ting?"
"Whaddya mean, we got ev'ryting!"
