Right, to avoid a thread hijack and after an amazingly brief dicussion in this thread: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Wine club will start on this Friday evening.

Who would like to recommend a starting wine?

To keep it simple make this weeks under £10 and a French red.

I'm quite happy for us to refine the terms of the club at a later date but for now lets keep it simple.

Me, sir. Me, sir.

Pick me! Pick me!

How about I suggest the first wine along with my tasting notes on Friday afternoon. The FIRST person to post a review of the wine picks the next one the following Friday with the FIRST person who posts a review to that picking the following wine and so on.

For clarification: a review has to be as detailed as you can make it, record what food you had with it if any, suggestions for what else might go with it etc?

Agree with that. Has to be something easily obtainable from an offie or the supermarket. Anything that involves ordering it on-line is probably too hard.

tesco should be ideal, they usually have 4-5 french reds reduced at 50% off from £10-15rrp. have had some great ones recently.

I agree. I've got an idea for a £7 Tescos special if no-one has a better suggestion, but I'm no expert.

I really think this will work better if it is simple. i.e.

1. Buy wine.
2. Drink it on Friday. (NO spitting wink)
3. Post what you think about it here.

We might all learn something and the worst outcome is we have to drink some wine.

That might favour those who start drinking early!

Good a place as any to start.

Has no one got a wine suggestion? It might take a couple of days for people to find the wine.

I'll try and do one tonight if I can. I need to peruse the wine cellar hehe or "cupboard under the stairs" followed by making sure the stuff can be obtained from the supermarket.

I'm going to go with a Fitou I think - but I'll write it up tonight.

PS if anyone beats me to it that's OK. I'll reserve my suggestion for another week!

No - it is a good idea. Lets cut down to only one bottle a night. You have to start somewhere.

This sounds like a really good idea. I'm really getting into this winetasting lark and I'm especially interested in what other people think too. Can I make a suggestion? Can we PLEASE at some point try some English wine. There's some excellent vineyards around the UK and we are bringing out some great sparkiling wines in this country. Btw: can we keep it under a tenner please?! Teresa

the promenade du pape is at £5 [half price] and is very drinkable, though i think the offer ends this evening on that one. the other i really liked was a cru du beaujolais - moulin a vents - which has been repriced permanently at £5.99 from £12.

as i say i'm no expert but my reasoning has always been a £15 bottle should be better than a £5 one and the nearer its made to the UK the transport cost will be cheaper. really liking the big burgundy's and looking for lighter fruity reds.

i'd just about kicked my whisky habit before this thread came along. bugger.

Sounds like one for the list.

No good for this week though as it is not French.

With respect, I beg to differ and I wouldn't say Chapel Down was anywhere near as good as some of the others made here. Biddenden and Tenterden do some great ones, as do Nyetimber, and there are many more. I'm no wine connoisseur but I do know the difference between poor and decent tasting vino! However difference of opinion would add to great debate for the PH Wine Club!

I thought that, however Denbies 'Juniper Hill' is getting close to something you might want to buy. It's on sale at the vineyard, though I haven't seen it in any shop as yet.
