How come I never see dishes with kidney or liver on Chinese or Indian menus?
Is there a good reason or am I not eating in the right places.

You arent eating in the right places. Chinese eat anything and adore liver, kidney, tripes, lung etc. From my impression from being there, they like offal more than they do meat.

therefore, if none of your local Chinese restaurants have that kind of stuff on them, they probably cater too much to western-chinese expectations.

we are slowwwwwly getting mainland chinese food in this country, rather than the Anlgo-hong kong gloppy stuff we have had for the last 50 years. In London there are quite a lot of mainland restaurants now due to the number of Chinese university students, such as Red n Hot, Bar Shu, Angeles, Leong Legends (taiwanese), and Little Lamb.

I believe Red N Hot has a branch in Birmingham, which is near-ish to you? Try the man-and-wife offal slices, or fire-exploded kidney flowers.
