Best baseline ever.

For me, some of the best bass playing i have ever heard was by mick karn when he was with japan. Maybe not strictly what people mean by a good bassline, but hell, that guy could play the fretless like michaelangelo painting the cistine!
Good call Pino Palladino who played with Paul Young at the time of the 'No Parlez' album amoungst others is also very good with fretless.

I really like this one from Daft Punk - Face to Face:

I appreciate it isn't a 'bassline' in the classic sense of the word but I think it's some of the most creative sampling I've heard used in a dance track. And I still can't figure out what they all are!
Also, Jamiroquai, Travelling Without Moving:

Just two that jumped out - there's a billion more...
Love travelling without moving, Stuart Zender really shines on that track.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DFZn56UcVQ

Face to Face was co produced with Todd Edwards and you can really hear his influence on the first section of that track. If you like it you should probably check out his other material, plenty of it on You Tube.
Another one bites the dust and Dragon Attack from The Game - thanks John (Queen seem vastly under represented in both this and the Guitarist thread - when did they become so yesterday?)
Nice and Sleazy - thanks Jean Jacques
Waterfront
You can call me Al - especially the solo
Mainstream I know, but I stil like em and they were the first to spring to mind when thinking "Bass"

One of my favourite basslines to play.I'll also suggest Breaking into Heaven by the Stone Roses, Sing it Back by Moloko and I was made to love her by Stevie Wonder.
I also find Super Sharp Shooter by the Ganja Kru especially pleasing to bang out.
As for best, I'll add another vote to Rapper's Delight/Good Times. Such simple funk which I'll never tire of playing.

Not the best/most complicated (some are very simplistic to a non-musician) but highly effective ones that really drive the songs IMHO, plus not mentioned yet:
Blur - Coffee & TV
Young Disciples - Get Yourself Together
Brand New Heavies - Back To Love (probably other BNH tracks as well)
Happy Mondays - Hallelujah
Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl

Madonna's "get into the groove" I know it synthesised but is just so good to follow.
If you've got that on Cd check the back of the case as this was recorded in `Q Sound` which i think (waits to be corrected ) is a form of surround sound. The track Vouge has a real baseline to it and Express yourself is fairly good to !Gassing Station | Music | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
