I don't value speed in hip hop any more than I give credence to guitarists because they happen to be able to play scales at warp 9

eta I quite like the track Timberlake did with TI boxedin

WOW.

Quite an unbelievable amount of ignorance in this thread.

First off, race has nothing to do with being good at something or 'credible'; why would it? If you think that race is part of the equation then please break down why... I'm truly intrigued. If someone grows up around a particular thing, why would they not be influenced or affected by it - or go on to excel at that particular thing, be it music or anything else.

Secondly, how is a whole genre crap because you don't like some of the songs you've heard. Dismissing a genre because of the subject matter of some of the tracks you've heard in the mainstream is a little silly and asking to be swayed is lazy. If you were genuinely interested then you'd look for yourself.

Anyone saying that rap won't be remembered in five years time - or ten, etc... do you know how long hiphop has been around? This in itself proves you're theory wrong. Hiphop has now influenced every other mainstream genre of music as well as mainstream culture in general. Breakdancers are used in pop videos and tampon adverts; grafitti appears on walls in east London and also on the side of Sprite cans; rock, pop, R&B, dance has all been infused with it.

With all that said, I personally don't like a lot of modern hiphop; for the same reason as has been mentioned, that being the content, generally. But there is some great hiphop around, you just have to dig a little. And that's just IMO of course, it's not my job to convince anyone otherwise.

Just some tracks I like:

Having lost a portion of my life going through this thread, I noted the fact there is a huge amount of 'txt spk'. Coincidence?

I think BodyCount were/are awesome too. Although they haven't released an album since 2006 due to there only being Ice T and Ernie C left from the original line up. There best album imo was their 1994 album called Born Dead.
As for Cypress Hill Bones disc I think that was ok but nothing special.

I'm a rock/metal fan more than a rap fan, but Eminem is still one of my favourite artists because I appreciate his talent. Relapse was amazing, possibly one of the best albums ever released.

Eminem has been great lyricly in his songs but his voice isn't great, its the same for singers like Ian Brown or even Barry Manilow, both have terrible singing voices but have written some great songs!

As for white rappers The Lonely Island are a bit of a pisstake group really and its more hiphop than rap but some of it is very good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XLZtQROCU4

'Hope' by the Non-Prophets - well worth a listen if you've not come across it before. Sage Francis is a master of rythem and rhyme.

Didn't think much of Relapse..not compared to his past stuff.
