On the death front, you've got Black Breath. Obvious start point is "Entombed!", but there's enough other stuff going on to keep it interesting.

Not really my cup of tea, but at the more modern end of the death metal spectrum, Dyscarnate might tick some boxes?

Guess you'd label this hardcore, and as such a genre I don't listen to a great deal these days, but this is nicely noisy without falling into the trap of feeling contrived with it.

The Armed

Reminds me of a very, very angry Winnebago Deal for some reason.

Sad news :-

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-20836...

Odd to see the phrase "death metal" on the BBC.

Call it tech / melo / fkingwhatever, it's all death metal to me, and this is the release of the year for me;

http://www.scionav.com/collection/1287/Arsis---Lep...

A free release from Arsis, funded by Scion Automotive, Toyota corp's brand used to target the youth of America. I don't see what ripping death metal has to do with Toyota's current selection of bland hatch backs, but I'm not complaining. Arsis have got to be one of the most underrated bands on the death metal scene. I'd give a bk to see them live. Black Dahlia Murder should hit them up for support on their next UK tour.

The quality of the riffing and soloing on this release is unprecedented (barring other Arsis / Black Dahlia Murder releases) and it just pummels like you wouldn't believe. "Veil of Mourning Black" might be track of 2012 for me, but they are all stormers. I'm just glad that there are still some bands out there who just slay it, instead of pandering to these hopeless trendcore / djentboi fads that have plagued metal for the last few years.

Cheers, free stuff at Xmas.

Marvellous.

Never heard of Arsis for some reason. Little bit too reliant on the techdeath blasting for my liking, but good when they vary it. Hints of Necroticism era Carcass in some of the riffs and soloing, and more than a bit of Jeff Walker about the vocals, which is nice, as too much today goes down the "brootal" Dying Fetus route, which is tedious in the extreme.

Quite how they're linked to selling Toyotas I have no idea?

There is something incredibly un-metal about about this, isn't there.

A bit like this:

Maybe they're going to change their name to Auris or Avensis in the near future, who knows?! What next, Fenriz advertising iPads?

Black Dahlia Murder were mentioned up there as well. Another one of those bands I probably should enjoy, but just can't, although I can't explain why.

Anyway, let's have some Unleashed shall we?

So, Christmas Eve then. Perfect time to be listening to Craft's "fk the Universe". Struggling to think of a colder, more chilling album to be honest. Really is an unsettling, seething beast of a thing.

I have a suggestion, although I can't find any YouTubery for it, and it's not a metal album.

Pete Namlook's " New Organic Life III" is...

...I dunno.

Wrong.

In a good way.

I think.

Hmm.

Whilst locating some Hungarian folk thrash on eMusic, I happened across this interesting article about black metal in Norway.

I think it's due to Scion trying to become a "lifestyle brand" in the US rather than just being a car manufacturer, though tbh they'd have been better off signing releasing free dubstep / brostep EPs as opposed to rather niche death metal EPs.

I'm enjoying the pensive (and not terribly heavy, if I'm honest) noodlings of Agalloch at the moment, now I've been keelhauled

Quality. I saw Alestorm live at the Electric Ballroom, Camden, supporting Sabaton...

Most fun gig I've ever been to.

Think I've posted Entities before? Earlier stuff was (for me) ruined when they lobbed the usual shouty vocals over it, but they've got a selection with and without up on Bandcamp.

http://entities916.bandcamp.com/track/tigers-blood

Said before, but sans vocals, I find this stuff more than listenable.
