I wouldn't really class Everlast as rap as such. Very good tho.

Try this for a bit of Tupac which I think is great.

'fraid you're losing me.. ok, it's not mindless, but it isn't aesthetically pleasing. Think I'm falling back to my not liking rap. Shame, cos it was beginning to be interesting! keep linking, I'll listen. smile
don't forget that slot of rap from this era was written by angry young men, who genuinly were growing up in quite horrible rough conditions where gang life was not a choice. There is a reason that slot of rap is about guns and violence and drugs - that being that people rapped about what they knew and what life was like. It set a trendcwhich has continued through to today.

If you want really angry check out some NWA - but again I see them as talented guys.

ok, am listening right now but it's gone a bit the way I was trying to avoid!!
HOWEVER I refer to the subject of this thread - the black lads DO seem to rap better than the white guys. Not that Hendrix or Armstrong would recognise this ! (two of my fave artists)

Can I have the attention of the class for one second?

Hi kids! Do you like violence? (Yeah yeah yeah!)
Wanna see me stick Nine Inch Nails through each one of my eyelids? (Uh-huh!)
Wanna copy me and do exactly like I did? (Yeah yeah!)
Try 'cid and get fked up worse that my life is? (Huh?)
My brain's dead weight, I'm trying to get my head straight
But I can't figure out which Spice Girl I want to impregnate (Ummmm..)
But it's very easy to take lyrics from one song and generalise it to the entire genre. Just look at this Black Eyed Peas song:

Gotta get that (x3)
Gotta get that that that, that that

Boom boom boom (Gotta get that) (x4)

Boom boom boom (Yeah) (x2)
Boom boom boom (x2)

Yo
I got the hit that beat the block
You can get that bass overload
I got the that rock and roll
That future flow

That digital spit
Next level visual st
I got that (Boom boom boom)
How the beat bang (Boom boom boom)

I like that boom boom pow
Them chicken jackin' my style
They try copy my swagger
I'm on that next st now
I'm so 3008
You so 2000 and late
I got that boom boom boom
That future boom boom boom
Let me get it now

Boom boom boom (Gotta get that) (x4)

Boom boom boom (Yeah) (x2)
Boom boom boom [x2]
Is that truly representative of all pop and hip-hop music?

Damn this is actually interesting enough to keep me posting as Monday approaches.
But I think the genre is becoming a cliche of itself with the gangsta stuff, and the sound of many of the songs is very similar. I suppose it's like saying all classics or all opera is junk and sounds the same, it's all a matter of personal taste. Well it's been quite entertaining so far, with good reasoned discussion.

I think its cool to not like people like Eminem.

I personally find the first 2 albums , and possibly 3rd too, very good albums. yes the beats are simple, and are not produced by the biggest names out there (hell Jay-z still can't make a decent album today when he has Kanye west doing every song) but they work, are catchy, have content, and quite frankly sound like they should be coming from someone a lot older and wiser considering he was in his early twenties..

Some people will never like it, and they will look at a lyrics list and then pick holes in it, that is just life..

He is one guy that never really goes on about money though, it might be something that is just programmed into black rappers, as most of them at some point go on about money. Eminem from what I can remember doesn't really do this.. which is refreshing.

If you can get over the anoying voice, then you will see he can out-do many of the legends at their own game (Renegade by Jay-z for example, he gets owned on his own song) and from this has got huge respect from the biggest people in the industry, and has more money than he probably knows what to do with..

One thing I think the bloke is not is fake..You cannot make some of the songs he has made without meaning it..Go and listen to the seond album and tell me he is trying to be someone he isn't.

I think Hertsbiker needs more mainstream rap. An introduction by means of more pure or intense rap won't do him any favours.

Try something with a more accessible pop flavour even if it may not be held in high regard by true connoisseurs.

Biggie Smalls: "Juicy"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsT8FaZnzdE

He basically raps about his childhood and his journey to stardom...while it lasted.

"(fk all you hoes) Get a grip motherfker.

Yeah, this album is dedicated to all the teachers that told me
I'd never amount to nothin', to all the people that lived above the
buildings that I was hustlin' in front of that called the police on
me when I was just tryin' to make some money to feed my daughters,
and all the niggaz in the struggle, you know what I'm sayin'?

Uh-ha, it's all good baby bay-bee, uh

Verse One:

It was all a dream
I used to read Word Up magazine
Salt'n'Pepa and Heavy D up in the limousine
Hangin' pictures on my wall
Every Saturday Rap Attack, Mr. Magic, Marley Marl
I let my tape rock 'til my tape popped
Smokin' weed and bamboo, sippin' on private stock
Way back, when I had the red and black lumberjack
With the hat to match
Remember Rappin' Duke, duh-ha, duh-ha
You never thought that hip hop would take it this far
Now I'm in the limelight 'cause I rhyme tight
Time to get paid, blow up like the World Trade
Born filla, the opposite of a winner
Remember when I used to eat sardines for dinner
Peace to Ron G, Brucey B, Kid Capri
Funkmaster Flex, Lovebug Starsky
I'm blowin' up like you thought I would
Call the crib, same number same hood
It's all good

Uh, and if you don't know, now you know, nigga, uh

Chorus:

You know very well who you are
Don't let em hold you down, reach for the stars
You had a go, but not that many
'cause you're the only one I'll give you good and plenty

Verse Two:

I made the change from a common thief
To up close and personal with Robin Leach
And I'm far from cheap, I smoke skunk with my peeps all day
Spread love, it's the Brooklyn way
The Moet and Alize keep me pissy
Girls used to diss me
Now they write letters 'cause they miss me
I never thought it could happen, this rappin' stuff
I was too used to packin' gats and stuff
Now honies play me close like butter played toast
From the Mississippi down to the east coast
Condos in Queens, indo for weeks
Sold out seats to hear Biggie Smalls speak
Livin' life without fear
Puttin' 5 karats in my baby girl's ears
Lunches, brunches, interviews by the pool
Considered a fool 'cause I dropped out of high school
Stereotypes of a black male misunderstood
And it's still all good

Uh...and if you don't know, now you know, nigga

Verse Three:

Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis
When I was dead broke, man I couldn't picture this
50 inch screen, money green leather sofa
Got two rides, a limousine with a chauffeur
Phone bill about two G's flat
No need to worry, my accountant handles that
And my whole crew is loungin'
Celebratin' every day, no more public housin'
Thinkin' back on my one-room shack
Now my mom pimps a Ac' with minks on her back
And she loves to show me off, of course
Smiles every time my face is up in The Source
We used to fuss when the landlord dissed us
No heat, wonder why Christmas missed us
Birthdays was the worst days
Now we sip champagne when we thirst-ay
Uh, damn right I like the life I live
'Cause I went from negative to positive
And it's all...

(It's all good)"

As for whoever posted that list of all those rappers that Eminem supposedly taught to rap. I don't know if that was a windup or genuine ignorance, but it was seriously funny.rofl

I got tired of Eminem after his stuff got a bit stale. Going on about Kim, his mother etc etc got tiresome.

Jay Z is a very smart business man but isn't actually very good at rapping.

oh wow, tons to listen to. This is the most rap I've heard in my life and I'm determined to give it a fair chance so I'm listening to a few mins of each one (more if I like it). I think the easier listening stuff is ok (actually some is quite good!), the rest is what I was generalising over. Guess it's like all music types, some will appeal to some people. Not guaranteed to appeal to all.
Back to the thread and links to click...! b*ll*cks I should be sleeping by now.
