My favourite Rap line, by the Beastie Boys

"I'm up to my neck like Toulouse-Lautrec"

Nice and subtle. Some rappers reference stuff on a higher plain than guns and Gallardos.

Taskmaster burst the bionic zit-splitter
Breakneck speed we drown ten pints of bitter
We lean all day and some say that ain't productive
That depend upon the demons that you're stuck with
Cause right now, I see clearer than most
I sit here contending with this cheese on toast

Rhyming with "ten pints of bitter" and "cheese on toast" gets my vote.

Witness the fitness by Roots Manuva.

I was always under the impression that is was prison music, poetry to a beat (no instruments in prison.
most prisoners would sing about what they were in there for i.e thier (rap sheet)
and so gangsta rap was born.

I could be wrong

I think it is pushing things to suggest the word 'rap' actually stands for something.

If you look back to its roots it evolved out of mc's adding encouragement to crowds at parties.
It then became much more developed and complex.

Like ALL music forms some of it is absolute drivel.
Some though is incredibly clever and takes a high level of musical skill to achieve.

The rhythmic nuances some can achieve is fascinating.

Isn't that like asking about the division between country and folk?

Rap and Hip-Hop are 2 very different things.

I'm a big hip-hop fan but hate 'Rap' music.
