Well, just refurbished an old Jackson R.Rhoads I had lying in the attic for a while, and thought I'd tune it to E and get learning some good ol Metallica (yes, guitar hero spurred that interest again).

So whilst I'm doing okish in terms of technical ability, just wondering if there were any sites or tips on how they got that sound on the guitars originally?

It's only for my own enjoyment (fanboyism), as my actual sound for my music is completely different.

Some of the settings here might help: http://forum.grailtone.com/viewforum.php?f=35

I need to sit down with my Studio Pre and my parametric EQ and tweak like crazy, but really can't be arsed biggrin

Scooped mids, with about 3/4 treble and around 1/2 bass IIRC, it helps to have a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier but it sounds almost as good through a Marshall.

I know that Hetfield was using a Gibson 500t bridge pickup during MoP, then they had the EMG's for ...A

At home, I've got a POD mk2, and on the PC things like Guitar Rig which aren't that bad. Would rather have a Mesa but not possible here frown

IIRC I think they buggered up the post production on MOP (or it may have been RTL) It was one of the first albums recorded and produced digitally. The recordings were done with a fuller EQ, but then they scooped out the middle in the post-production phase.

Could be wrong though.

Wasn't James using his MkIIC+ on Puppets? I've seen on the web a while ago some post production notes including settings from Flemming Rasmussen which could also be of some use (but can't recall where I saw them).

I thought Dual Rec's didn't come in until later?

The Mesa Studio Pre is based on a MkIIC and can be tweaked to be more C+, although a lot is allegedly down to the output transformers used on those holy grail amps. The Mesa Studio Quad has a 2C/C+ based channel as well as a MkIII channel, but commands more cash. Or buy yourself a MkIIC+ wink

You're possibly right about the Dual Recs, they may have still been using their hot rodded JCM 800s then, I'm not too sure.

Now...how the hell am I going to get those old Mesa sounds: ie the MkIIC+
I'd definitely buy one but can't afford that at the moment, guessing around £1.5k +

More useful info here : http://noise101.wikidot.com/bands-in-the-studio#to...

Although puppets was too early for a dual rec, just came across this: http://forum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&... Sounds bloody close to me!!!

I picked up my Studio Pre for about £200, so you can get something ballpark for cheaper than a full on IIc+, but you'll need a poweramp to go with it, or at least an existing amp to utilise its power section. Ever since I got mine late last year, my dual rec hasn't seen much action frown Might have to revisit it having heard the clips on the above link. If only I had a stereo setup where I could run both at once biggrin

no cliche, but get your own sound.
That's why I initially stressed that in my original post if you read it fully...I already have my own sound, and I have my preferred methods for recording and getting it 'just so'.
This is just for me to fart around with, have fun and get better at playing, I don't want to sit here and record anything at all.

Get a Digitech RP multi effects board, it has amp modulator called 'Rectify' on it, no prizes for guessing what it's based on!
