I was forced to watch ugly betty the other day.
I'll spare you the horror but.
A part of the story line was a clearly latent homosexual moving to Africa to help the little Africans. Apparently they had to drag water 19 miles to the village from the river.
My girlfriend looked at me in horror when I stated that a white man would have built the village nearer the river.....

I'm pretty sure that white artists have won MOBOs. Its 'music of black origin' - not 'music by black people'
Music of white origin, as someone pointed out before, is The Proms for example.
Yes, they have.Music of white origin, as someone pointed out before, is The Proms for example.
JLS. Who wrote the music (ie. the origin of their tracks)? Yup, predominantly white people.
MOBOs have virtually zero credibility, and it was nice to have this confirmed by a musician, who happens to be black. He reckons that the MOBOs have long since been irrelevant.

Well, actually, neither of you should be allowed to use that word as it is offensive to most. clonmult said:

If a black person sings some country music, they can't win a MOBO.
But but but... why is there not a "Music of WHITE origin" award? It wouldn't be allowed in the UK, would it? Imagine picking up the Radio Times (no, I don't buy it) and seeing MOWO at 7pm. There'd be an outcry. Yes caine77 & Marf it's done every year because a lot of people don't like the hypocrisy of it. Every year.

You are getting hung up on the name "of black origin". It's simply a boring catch all term used to define music that maybe has more Afican / Caribbean roots for example. If you want to see a music of "white" origin award ceremony, then go to the Proms or something.
Why are people actually getting worked up about this?! Its a niche market of music that have created their own ceremony.
The name is asking for trouble, but ask yourself this... If in some alternate reality Africa was the music capital of the world and slowly some white people turn up and introduced their own style of music that was different to all the rest there, what would be a decent way of naming the award ceremony so that it was clear what the style of music being judged was?
Which leads onto the question, what would you like the MOBOs to be called instead?
Yes there is some hypocrisy involved, but its not enough to get worked up about. Just get on with life instead.

IMO, 'black' music or 'MOBO' would be defined as 'music composed, recorded and performed predominantly by black people.'
Anything wrong with that?
Thus 'white' music or MOWO must be the opposite.
The difference is that if I went around saying I liked white music, or phoning a radio station and asking them to play more white music, I'd never hear the end of it. And that's why I disapprove of the MOBO awards, it's racism, pure and simple. But while white racism is frowned upon, black racism is tolerated, even encouraged.
It's that simple.

Yes. You're conflating "origin" with "performed by".Anything wrong with that?
The O is important. It is why Amy Winehouse won a MOBO, despite being quite definitely not black at all.

"White" music? Radio 3. Or any of a bazillion American internet country music stations. The Proms. Morris dancing. Celtic folk music. Kraftwerk. Etc. Etc.The difference is that if I went around saying I liked white music, or phoning a radio station and asking them to play more white music, I'd never hear the end of it. In a hypothetical MOWO, who would you have as finalists for, say, best band, best male artist and best female artist?
I reckon a good proportion of the griping about the MOBO awards is the depressing (for a white racist) realisation that black people got the best tunes.

Yes white artists have won before, but it just seems an excuse to give black people awards. Music of white origin, as someone pointed out before, is The Proms for example.
Hardly a consistent position to adopt.
(I know, I know...irony?)
