my dads got a 356c with a 908 engine in it... believe me 120bhp is enough in that car.

great fun but not the best of hangling...

leave it alone, just tinker and slam it..

You would get away with that i think!

If you want a deeper convera]sation on this subject, logg onto www.ddk.com

Forum: 356: pose your questions and wait not very long for some good responses. They are NOT stuck-up types, and hotrods/outlaws are very popular over there.

I'll bet all the ones above are a handful with 300+ hp hanging over the rear wheels and VW front suspension.

Wishbones all round, 4 to 5" extra wheelbase and the engine weight moved in front of the rear wheels is gonna make a huge difference to the handling.

I couldn't bring myself to cut up an original 356 that much. There are fibreglass bodies available for coupe too (obviously speedster). I had about 250bhp in my old chesil speedster (WRX engine) and it coped with the power surprisingly well...

I dont want to do a fiberglass one, I was at one stage thinking that if I could get someone to make me a carbon fiber body I might be interested, but really, I want to do a steel one because I want to play around with the English wheel. I did a course with Ron Fournier last year, going back again in April.

Never fear, I will not be cutting up a numbers matching survivor. I'm looking for a basketcase shell, dont need any drivetrain. Probably not going to rescue one as bad as this guy though!!! very brave man!!

Know what you mean about working with steel, very satisfying! I bought myself a beadroller and just finished rebuilding this chassis for my current project:

Was a lot of work squeezing a G50 into a bug's chassis! Mated to a WRX RA engine..

It is the engine/box out of my DIY converted Lola t 492 sports racer for hillclimbs.

The engine is a flat 6 3200cc Porsche with 915 gearbox, C&P flipped for mid engine.

I needed a new set of headers to squeeze into the chassis that was originally designed for a 2L Ford Pinto.

Dimensions are:

Flange C/L to front of engine = 800mm
Flange to top of weber carbs = 450mm
Width of engine = 850mm

^^ that's the same car pack on the first page.

I've been in touch with a bunch of the more prominent 356 guys in the USA and have feelers out for a shell....

Thunderbirds are go!

Bought this roller today... all the bodywork done, all metal, no filler.

Chasing down the Audi engine + trans at the moment. Thanks to all the Ultima guys who helped with leads.

RCR are supplying billet wishbones... probably SLC ones.

I'll post a link to a build thread in due course.

^^ I read that the car in the link about has a 20:80 weight distribution.... that must be VERY scarey!

The build thread will be here >>

http://www.356registry.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1...

I had another thread going (see first few lines in the link above) but there was a load of non-related stuff posted and the moderators shut it, saying I should open a new one when I buy a shell and start the project, it seems they thought I was a dreamer.

I decided I'd brave the elements and post on the 356 registry, where all the 356 enthusiasts hang out, many of them originality nuts. To my surprise, most of the cars I was offered as donors were from well respected restorers, the one I bought is from www.eurowerks.com ... as you can see he does some very fine work. It was his personal car that he feels he will not get around to restoring. Ive had a load of PM's from these guys encouraging me to do something different.... who'd have thought!

Anyway, enough of the 356 on the Ultima forum. I came here for Audi info and received loads of it, thanks guys.

Oh..... does anyone have the dimension from driveshaft centreline to front of the engine on an Audi V6? Im thinking that if the V8 is too tight I might run a supercharged or TT V6.

Crafty, where abouts are you located as I have a spare Audi V8 block and 01X box you can borrow to see if the V8 will fit before commiting yourself to buying parts.

I contacted Dave, he confirmed that the TT + 6 speed is 660mm, only 30mm shorter than the V8.

I understand that the later V6's are shorter, as the camchains have been moved to the rear of the engine, as they are in the V8.

Here's a cross section. This is the standard wheelbase, engine image was scaled to fit.
I have moved the engine back 150mm, the wheels will move with it.
The brown seat is the location in the original image.
One of the 356 guys checked some dims and confirmed that the seating position is where the green seat is, and he's 6' tall.
... so there is room for the V8, one way or another.
