Crafty, have you looked at the nissan VQ40DE? Just thinking with a few mods it should beable to make similar power to the Audi engine. Dont know about the dimensions though.... i have heard of VQ35Des making over 350bhp with just bolt on (not forced induction). Just a thought.

Chris.

The beauty of an Audi unit is that the Audi Transaxle bolts right up with a S4 Clutch, so no need for any adaptors and complicated flywheel and clutch arrangements.... oh and there cheap to, and 6 speed and silly ratios if you use a Diesel gearbox.....

Engine S4 V8 £2000-£3000, Gearbox "Diesel" used £200-£600 depending on age and mileage. So it tends to be a clear choice on many fronts if you want a Mid mounted V8. and if you want a small V8 it's even better as it's probably the smallest for that price your get with near 400bhp as well..... oh and it weighs less than the gearbox out of a Ford GT.....

Need I go on.... Basically it a great little package and kept below 400bhp the gearbox would be fine.

Right now where do I store my Soapbox ??soapbox

Looking forward to following the build!
Try http://sites.google.com/site/dclaregtm/ for info on the V6 option...
I contacted Dave, he confirmed that the TT + 6 speed is 660mm, only 30mm shorter than the V8.

I understand that the later V6's are shorter, as the camchains have been moved to the rear of the engine, as they are in the V8.

Here's a cross section. This is the standard wheelbase, engine image was scaled to fit.
I have moved the engine back 150mm, the wheels will move with it.
The brown seat is the location in the original image.
One of the 356 guys checked some dims and confirmed that the seating position is where the green seat is, and he's 6' tall.
... so there is room for the V8, one way or another.

Im loving this

YIPPPEEEEE!!!!!!

Ive been trying to find a way to run an FSI engine, there isnt an aftermarket system that can run the FSI injection.

I was offerred an FSI engine converted back to multiport injection, but is not a cheap conversion as it involves plugging FSI holes, new fuel rails, aftermarket ECU, loom etc etc....

I just got off the phone to a guy in the states http://www.goapr.com/... they sell ECU upgrades for all sorts of cars. I asked him if they can unlock the OEM ECU so it can run outside of the car. He said what they do in their race cars is run the stock dash under the seat, and maintain the key and the ignition lock.

SOOOOOO.... for any of you folks thinking of an Audi engine, there is a simple solution!!!!

Stay tuned!

very interesting article, not sure if you really want to do that.........I start to love the simplicity of the yank engines and apart from the limited reving they offer they seem the best choice for a home builder project. There is simply too many bits on these modern engines that can break.

Sure.... for the Ultima the LS engine is simple...However its not going to fit in the 356... and in any case, putting an Audi engine in there is already naughty enough, putting an LS in there would be far too naughty - even for me!

Actually, I was originally scared off by the complexity of the RS engine, but I had the same issue when I wanted to put the LS into the Ultima back when it was relatively uncommon....and that worked out OK... So I figure just jump in and give it a go.

Have you tried contacting Maurits who converted an Audi V10 to run in an Ultima? He may have some tips and people to contact http://www.mkb.demon.nl/

Ive had pricing from KMS, who did that conversion, they certainly do some great stuff with the individual throttle bodies. The ITB's along with standalone ECU, sensors etc all adds up, the RS4 running OEM ECU, sensors etc etc is less than 1/2 the price.

Firstly, I want to thank all the guys that offered to check out the RS4 engine. (didnt buy it - see below)

I'd also like to say a HUUUUGE thank you to Spatz, he has been helping me deal with some German vendors, and is getting the engine and trans that I did buy shipped to his place, crated together and sending to me. There's been dozens of emails back and forth and he has patiently dealt with all the translations and negotiations.

Its really great how all you Ultima guys have helped out... thanks again!!!

...........

A small spanner was thrown in the works. The guy selling the RS4 engine took the transaxle off and found "a hairline crack"......... RUN Crafty, as fast as your paypal account will go!

One of the problems of buying an engine from a salvage high performance car is its either:

A. Been pampered all its life by a loving owner, and some other idiot has ran into it.
B. Been thrashed all its life and the owner has eventiually ran out of luck.
C. Been stolen, thrashed and recovered.
D. Been stolen, thrashed, involved in an accident, and recovered.

Either way.... there's a risk.

The GOOD news is that I found an Audi dealer with a handful of Audi test engines. I picked up S5 engine with 124km!!! I think a couple of the other Ultima guys have these ex audi engines. They have test mules used for testing suspension, climate control, engine, brakes, all sorts of stuff, so a 124km car is unlikely to have been thrashed.

The engine is from an Audi dealer, they are also supplying brand new fuel pumps, instrument cluster, ignition + key, MAF and other bits that were not on the engine but required. The package is complete with AC compressor, PS pump, starter, flywheel, clutch, cats and also the quattro transaxle that came with the engine, they didnt want to sell the engine without it......... EUR7300 all up.

They had some other engines with 4xxxkm and 6xxxkm without trans for EUR400 less, but I decided to pay the extra.

Separate to this I also scored a brand new 01x 6 speed from a Diesel. This is the trans used in GT40s, Lambo replicas and also the Audi engined Ultimas.... EUR1200 BRAND NEW!!!

So... for anyone considering an Audi engine in an Ultima.... EUR8500 for NEW engine and NEW trans. T

I'll cut this story short here as the engine stuff is Ultima relevant. I will keep posting the engine related stuff here as I think it might help out anyone considering the Audi engine.... full updates of progress will be featured on the link below....
