Oil cooler connections
Discussion
I don't know that it truely matters, but wanted to ask around to be certain...
I have a oil filter re-locator along with the oil cooler. Should the oil be filtered before being sent to the cooler, or to the cooler first, then filtered? I would think filter first, but...
Related question: I have seen mentioned that some have put a oil thermostat/bypass before the cooler to prevent "over cooling" during cooler ambient temperatures, and sending cold oil to the engine. Is this really necessary? I have searched my parts bibles (Jegs and Summit) and can't find said thermostat/bypass part. Where'd you find them?
Thanks!

It will not make any difference if the oil is filtered before or after the oil cooler (unless you are expecting sizable parts of your engine to block it up!). What might be more of a consideration is if you intend to use an Accusump oil system, their manual states that the oil should be filtered. That is oil passes through the filter before charging the Accusump cylinder, primarily to protect the piston seals. As it happens with the normal Ultima setup this is not the case (as far as I could work out) due to the takeoff adapter passing unfiltered oil out from the oil pump.
As for oil temperature; I am about to fit a Mocal remote thermostatic unit as my car does over cool the oil. The Mocal thermostat opens at 80degC which is a ideal working temperature for the engine and oil. Typically, and obviously dependant on ambient air temperature, mine runs around 60 to 75degC.

Allen,
Have a look at www.thinkauto.com as they are a great supplier of all things related to oil coolers and they do a remote thermostat you can put in line.
