Found an interesting post on a GT40 forum showing removable side windows..... the 1/4 window would look crap on the GTR... but the concept of a fibreglass frame aint bad.

Same concept but the ones on the GT40 seem far more substantial. I looked at the ones in question at the open day and by modifying the standard side screen would say that they were a waste of time, to flimsy in this application and a very poor seal.

Here's the old thread.

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?p=1&f=20&t=224597&h=0

I was thinking along the lines of the GT40 ones before, with a separate frame.... the way the GT40 one is done they have created a 1/4 window... which I am not that keen on...

I do like the way they have bolted a 'glass frame in the existing hole with the window inside that on a thinner frame.... that gets around the current problem in that the reveal on the GTR frame is too shallow to have a second frame...

It looks like the inner frame may be alloy... I have posted on the GT40 forum to try to get more details.

Looked at the old thread and noted that I didn't reply after the removable windows were installed on my car. The photos are on the USA website gallery. I store them in a canvas bag that fits easily behind the passenger seat. I made the mounting tabs from sheet aluminum and the thumb screws and round head bolts are stainless. Drilled the plexigall slowly with a regular bit. The weather strip is 1/16th thick and 1/4 inch wide, it has adhesive that attaches it to the window.

This is an easy solution that works well and is actually water proof.

i really like kens idea and the latches look very neat.
not so keen on the GT40 windows, looks a bit 'industrial'.

the black gtr that was at the open day uses the mounts from a peugeot 106 rear quarter light. it does look a bit flimsy but is waterproof with very little wind noise as well.

I would be interested in a removable set like Kens.

Not sure about the opening ones like the GT40 though. On the move, the helicopter vents throw in a lot of air and would make them a bit pointless?

Would also like to know what it's like driving around without side windows. Would it be any different to my daily driver?

What about some very old styled window type like the 2cv had, you know you can open it with a swing and lock it at the bottem...only the sort of principle ofcorse...in the Ultima ofcorse nicer made...

But Grant, was the 2CV interior not the inspiration for the pattern stitched into your rear bulkhead lining?hehe

Thinking about that again I think the Black GTR at the open day in 2005 wich I made some pictures of have the best solution for the GTR the one with the 106/205 rear-side window openers, that one can also easely left out! if you would like that, its a simple but good solution, looked very nice too...see the picture you can see me too from the back next to it

here more close up;

Crafty,
This might be of some help, or maybe just give you some more ideas if your looking for inspiration.

www.lambobuilder.com/windows.html

in regards to the GT40s, there is apparently a gathering in Melbourne this weekend, not sure that I will be able to make it. If I get a chance I will drop in and see if I can get some photos of any opening windows.

I did manage to get some photos of the Air con as well, but I think you have it sorted now, as per a previous post of yours.

Regards Ryan

"Would also like to know what it's like driving around without side windows."

It's a great experience. I love open top cars and that is what its like. The air for the most part blows right by without blasting into the cabin

If you do this make sure that you get a canvas bag made for the windows. The design that I have is like an envelope with a divider in the middle. One window on each side of the divider. Had a scare when I stored them for over a month and they came out of the vinyl sleeve that I made cloudy. After about a month out of the bag they returned to normal.

I haven't painted the alloy tabs black yet but when complete they should blend in well.

This is a simple solution that works great.

Maybe those hinged ones would be better with two latched on the rear of the screen, one top and one bottom rather than one in the middle.
