Max width of engine (across exhaust manifolds) = 760mm
Max height of engine (sump to idle air valve) = 660mm
Drive shaft position (front pulley to drive flange) =690mm (or from gearbox rear casing = 510mm)

crafty, what are you up to, i smell a plot?
.... only 6 weeks to go and I move to the new house with a 2 car garage, so planning my next build.I have Fran Hall on one side twisting my arm off to do an SLC.
My other arm is being twisted by the uniqueness and challenge of doing this>>>
The 356 is a tiny 2100mm wheelbase. In the photoshop above, the engine is not exactly side on, and Ive tried to scale the engine as best I can guess.
I think a combination of moving the wheel arches back a bit and also running with a bit of driveshaft angle and it will work.
Packaging for the cooling system will be the challenge, I dont think a front mounted radiator can be done without spoiling the front. It may work with a scoop behind the front valance, with a nearly horizontal radiator with ducting over the top that dumps the hot air out into the front wheel wells....
Roof scoop can bring air down into the engine.
I really love 356 Outlaws....
Porsche Turbo (first pic below) has been done. With the 2100mm wheelbase and a heavy 300+HP hanging off the back this thing must be VERY scarey to drive.
VW Turbo (second pic below) has been done
Mid engined Porsche has been done (third pic below), but was stretched and chopped and the underside is very rough (fourth pic below)
Im thinking full chassis with wishbone suspension all round, big brakes, Air-ride.
Its a HUGE undertaking, but one that would be very rewarding.

my dads got a 356c with a 908 engine in it... believe me 120bhp is enough in that car.
great fun but not the best of hangling...
leave it alone, just tinker and slam it..
Dom
I'll bet all the ones above are a handful with 300+ hp hanging over the rear wheels and VW front suspension.great fun but not the best of hangling...

Wishbones all round, 4 to 5" extra wheelbase and the engine weight moved in front of the rear wheels is gonna make a huge difference to the handling.

I dont want to do a fiberglass one, I was at one stage thinking that if I could get someone to make me a carbon fiber body I might be interested, but really, I want to do a steel one because I want to play around with the English wheel. I did a course with Ron Fournier last year, going back again in April.

Never fear, I will not be cutting up a numbers matching survivor. I'm looking for a basketcase shell, dont need any drivetrain. Probably not going to rescue one as bad as this guy though!!! very brave man!!

Thunderbirds are go!
Bought this roller today... all the bodywork done, all metal, no filler.
Chasing down the Audi engine + trans at the moment. Thanks to all the Ultima guys who helped with leads.
RCR are supplying billet wishbones... probably SLC ones.
I'll post a link to a build thread in due course.

^^ I read that the car in the link about has a 20:80 weight distribution.... that must be VERY scarey!
The build thread will be here >>

I had another thread going (see first few lines in the link above) but there was a load of non-related stuff posted and the moderators shut it, saying I should open a new one when I buy a shell and start the project, it seems they thought I was a dreamer.
I decided I'd brave the elements and post on the 356 registry, where all the 356 enthusiasts hang out, many of them originality nuts. To my surprise, most of the cars I was offered as donors were from well respected restorers, the one I bought is from www.eurowerks.com ... as you can see he does some very fine work. It was his personal car that he feels he will not get around to restoring. Ive had a load of PM's from these guys encouraging me to do something different.... who'd have thought!
Anyway, enough of the 356 on the Ultima forum. I came here for Audi info and received loads of it, thanks guys.

Looking forward to following the build!
Try http://sites.google.com/site/dclaregtm/ for info on the V6 option...
I contacted Dave, he confirmed that the TT + 6 speed is 660mm, only 30mm shorter than the V8.Try http://sites.google.com/site/dclaregtm/ for info on the V6 option...
I understand that the later V6's are shorter, as the camchains have been moved to the rear of the engine, as they are in the V8.
Here's a cross section. This is the standard wheelbase, engine image was scaled to fit.
I have moved the engine back 150mm, the wheels will move with it.
The brown seat is the location in the original image.
One of the 356 guys checked some dims and confirmed that the seating position is where the green seat is, and he's 6' tall.
... so there is room for the V8, one way or another.
