Driver critical after collision
A motorist is still in a critical condition in hospital after a crash in Berks between two cars at the weekend.
The man, who has not been named, was seriously injured when his sports car was involved in a collision with a BMW on the Lower Earley Way in Reading.
The driver of the BMW was also injured and taken to hospital after Saturday's crash but has since been released.
The road was closed for three hours and police are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
Hope the guy pulls through
My comments on having engine in front just my own personal view - Like Ultima's. Just that a good front engine can give you 3+ ft of deformable structure - even before you get to a nice solidly mounted engine to take some more - mine is crap from the side!.
Like everyone else has said - fingers cross for him.

Im sure I saw this car - driving along A232 around petersfield around 1pm on new years eve. He was heading towards petersfield. It was a yellow gell coat gtr, with rear wing, driven by a guy in his 40-50s .... hope not hurt! Trouble is the roads - even when they look dry at this time of the year can be really evil in somthing like an Ultima. I know from first hand experience - all that power can take you unaware very easily..... so take care!
If you mean the A272 then that was me.

That's the one. The other driver was walking round in a state of shock clutching his wrist.
As a longtime lurker around these parts I was sort of invloved. The BMW driver was my father. We were due to head off to a big old family New Years party with him and my sister when I got a phone call...
"Rob, I don't think I'll be able to go to the party tonight..."
This was pretty much in the first few minutes after the shunt. Could hear the sirens arriving in the background. I just thank god for Teutonic engineering otherwise my dad wouldn't have been quite so lucky... Three fractures in his left arm, one in his right. Bad bruising from the seat belt taking up the tension.
Seems like the driver of the Ultima was in a hurry, overtakes a cue of traffic on a left hand corner (his left) so he couldn't clearly see what, if anything was oncoming, as he pulls out he sees my dad, spins it and he impacted the centre of my dads front bumper pretty much side on at his rear passenger side wheel.

Blimey - sorry to hear that Rob. Hope your dad makes a full recovery
Side-on impacts are really bad as the harnesses can't do much for you. I would think that the whip effect can cause basial fractures which are normally fatal
Sincerely hope the other driver pull through.
But the lesson must be, that regardless of how fast/powerful your car is, you have a duty to use it on the road responsibly and in a safe manner.

As does my Dad, as shocked and pi**ed off as he is he really hopes the other driver makes it.
Dad's ok, it's going be a couple of months for his left arm to heal up but his right arm should be out of plaster very shortly. At first he was mourning his BMW, until we put him straight that it was only a car and it was more important that he got out. And now he's just trying to come to terms with a three month period without Golf.
Oh and then there was the 150 quids worth of shopping (including beers and wines) in the boot. He asked the investigating officer if she could rescue it from the yard where the wreck is being kept. Unfortunately she returned informing us the shopping seemed to have fused together in the smash, none worth saving, the back of that car will start to smell interesting soon.

That was pretty much where the first impact was when the black factory demo car was written off. As stig says, the harness' are not very effective with side ways impacts. There doesn't even need to be any cockpit intrusion. Lets hope the guy pulls through OK.
Lets all stay safe out there please!

Give our best wishes to your Dad, hope he makes a swift recovery !!!
I totally agree with Stig we drive the one of the fastest cars in the world you have to always remember that. If you want to understand what your car will do at full chat Bruntingthorpe it first before you do it on the roads.

Best wishes and a speedy recovery to all those involved in this unfortunate occurrence.
On a side note, having been involved in some FIA test's for 7-point harnesses and racing seats in the past, if the equipment in question has gained an FAI rating for use in Motor Sport they should be good for at least 20g’s of deceleration in front, back and sideways directions while restraining a 95Kg occupant, or in the testing case a "FMVSS standard 95% hybrid testing dummy". Not pretty to watch on the slow motion replay though, and surely a good reminder that no mater how good the engineering is, the best solution is obviously prevention of an accident in the first place.

Whatever the circumstances, a lesson to us all. RIP.
Would like to know, though, what exactly the circumstances were. I understand that the size of the Ultima company does not allow to do crash-tests. But maybe this accident could be analysed by the factory so that we all know what happened and why. I would be very interested to hear whether strenght of the chassis was the weak point or what else were the reasons for the fatal impact. Also, what was the speed, approx., or the exact place of the impact...
A thorough analysis could save some lives in future or prevent from serious injuries.
Deepest condolence with the driver´s family! Hope that will never happen to mine or others.
