Finlandia I need your sujestion, I have PL30 but I find the bass is less for my liking , I want to buy something under $30 with more bass but with similar sound quality, am looking at M9 and FA Alep which do u think is good, also is there any other IEM u recommend for under 30 bucks ?

I haven't heard the PL30 myself, but from what I have read about them, they do not seem overly bassy. You could try the A'leph with the foamhybrids from the PL30. This combination gives strong bass presence, with clear and detailed mids and highs.
It depends how much bass you want, and if you still appreciate clarity and detail?

In the £100/$160 range, Audio Technica CK10 rules, they are in fact one of the best IEM's of any price, and with a bit of luck they can be had for £100.
I need to replace my E4s, one of which has started buzzing, and would like to try the ATs, I can't see any close to £100 though - any recommendations re suppliers?

How is the bass of Aleph compared to M9 ?. M9 costs me $27(including shipping) and aleph costs $28 including shipping which do u think is more value for money ?
Also is there any other models under $30 I could consider ?

They were on sale recently for $160, at the moment the prices seems to be >$180 from US and >£160 in UK, best is to keep eyes open on amazon and the likes. The CK10's are built like tanks and should be a safe second hand purchase as well.

Sennheiser cx300 seems to the default choice for bass-a-plenty, but the bass is rather bloated and overpowering, I wouldn't recommend them for someone wanting more than just powerful bass.

A'leph, with foamhybrids would be my choice over the M9, better comfort and fit, slightly better detail and clarity, bass is pretty much on pair.

for public use i use my sennhieser cx500's. these seem to be a lot better balanced than the cx300's as they are good in the higher frequencies too, but there is still enough lower power for the bass monkeys

Just picked some up for 107 quid, so pleased with that - let's see how they perform when they arrive.

What a superb write up!
Does anyone know a decent outlet in New York City where I can buy or at least look at some of the above?
Cheers

Thanks.

In Living Stereo and Park Avenue Audio are two places that spring to mind, not sure how much they have in stock now, but a few years ago they carried a very complete line up of high end audio earphones.

Are the Westone UM3X any good when used with a portable audio source (iPod/iPhone) playing MP3 files rather than used as a monitor? My concern is that they will show up all the defects of compressed media?

[Edit]
Humm.. they do sound good, even when used with an iPod, but I'm not sure why you like the cable so much. It feels very cheap to me. Ah well, I have made my choice and I'll have to live with them! The cheap 90 deg jack is a bit of a pain too. It won't fit in an iPhone when using a 'bumper' or any other case I should imagine. Fortunately I went for the replaceable cable option, so I may buy a replacement and put my own 3.5mm jack on the end. Does anyone know if the cable length needs to be exact, or will cutting the jack off and soldering a new one on, providing a good solder joint is made, effect the sound quality?

These things are damn comfortable. I have trouble getting most IEMs to fit, so much so that even when shooting I have to wear external ear protection because in ear valves don't fit, or are too uncomfortable. I have been using the UM3X for over an hour already and it's like I'm not wearing anything (standard size foam tips). Worth the money purely for that reason! I was half expecting to have to get some custom tips made.

Sorry for a late reply, I'm on holiday wink

The cable is very light and unobtrusive, that is the main reason why I like it so much, also it does not suffer from microphonic noises. I like the 90 degree jack, although you may be right in the fit problems on recessed earphone plugs.
The cable length shouldn't matter, just cut it to your desired length and solder a new jack on and hey presto.

Anyway, enjoy your UM3X, they are excellent.
