Tv is almost 2 years old and has just started showing a thin lune down the screen.... Only really noticeable when the background is dark.

Given that (I assume) panny cover is 1 yr, is that it? Skip time?

My last tv ( giant box) was perfect for 10 years and still going strong at my inlaws place!

Should a 1k telly die after 18 months?

intriguing, although I have a a horrible feeling it didn't last too long before the stripes reappeared.

Assume nothing - clue yourself up on the Sale of Goods Act, and remember you bought the TV from a reseller, not Panasonic themselves!

Worth pursuing both IMO. The power button failed on my Toshiba about 4 months after the warranty expired. Currys wouldn't play ball under SOGA, Toshiba initially said sorry, no warranty no fix, then u-turned and paid for a local TV repair company to fix it.

It might be worth checking if you have a 5 year warranty. Panasonic dealers have been offering a 5 year warranty on and off for the last 4 years.

If you don't have the warranty find your receipt and contact Panasonic to see if they might agree to a goodwill repair.

Morning- I would go down the SOGA route. Paying that much for a TV and something has gone wrong is not acceptable. A TV is not a disposable item.

Dug out the receipt - sep 2009 and was given a free 3 year warranty from digitaldirect. However, it seems they went bust and no cover is being honored (nice)

So going to go direct to panny and see what they say.

As an aside - you'd think if a company wants to get all the benefit of taking over the trading name of a firm that screwed up they'd have to take on that firms obligations. Seems like someone gains from the brand with none of the downside.

Just spoke to them.

In June last year the comp that owned the trading name went bust. The trading name was bought by a new company (which internet gossip suggests are the same people) and they carried on trading....without having to worry to old liabilities (such as warranties)

Just read this on a review site from a guy who'd TV packed up - just like mine: This is what Digital Direct told him:

"You need to contact LG customer service on 08448 475454 since the company who you bought the TV from and hence the extended warranty no longer exists having gone into receivership last June.
Elitemark the company I work for bought the name Digital Direct and its web site from the receiver but does not have any responsibility for the extended warranties.
Since the company you purchased the TV from does not exist you will have to order and pay for your own repair/replacement, either via LG or another company.”

So it seems the old company went bust, the directors set up a new company and bought the name of the receivers (cheaply), and carried on trading without any of hassles of the old firm - like people with useless warranties.

As I said earlier - should not be allowed IMO and this thread is good evidence of that as people thought it was the same old firm. It isnt!

Here is the EU directive and SOGA supercedes this, keep on and speak to the CAB to get an official letter to them.

Very very interesting indeed. Have you got some proof of this phoneixing, it is utter ish behaviour.

The owner is a popular member on here - Derestrictor (you'll have read his posts I'm sure, he has a ludicrously effected posting style) and people are always hawking his site as a place to buy TVs from. Their delivery options were poor though so I'm glad I didn't now.

If what you say is true, certainly the evidence I have seen from googling makes it appear so, then it will be interesting to see if he carries enough weight to get it locked from a pally mod.

  • Watches this thread with great interest

"digitaldirect adminstarion elitemark" in Google pretty much sums it up.

I understand companies go bust and having done so should be no barrier to starting again (even the best businessmen run into trouble) but the notion that you can go under with huge debt, by the name off the receiver and carry on as though nothing happened......until someone asks about the warranty is not on. If they want customers to go back to them for repeat business (as I would have had I not had this issue) they you should take the good with the bad. You want the brand, take the baggage too.

Its just a faulty panel, if you phone panna and explain the situation it will get sorted but you may have to pay the labor cost of the repair, £100 isnt an unreasonable cost for a TV repair.

Just a faulty panel? £100 isn't unreasonable? I'd agree, but the op had a 3 year warranty, which possibly influenced his buying decision. Why should he now pay out for a repair?

Did you collect the screen from Digital Direct or was it shipped to you? The Panasonic extended warranty was for collection only, so if you did, you may find, as it was a MANUFACTURERS warranty, that you are covered, irrespective of the circumstances involving Digital Direct. Only slight problem is that the Pana extended warranties are 5 years.
If its a 3rd party thing from Domestic and General would it be worth calling them?
