Evening gents, I'm not sure whether this belongs in Home and Hi-Fi, Computer games, or Gadgets and stuff! Seems best here though....

I've just got a new amp with 5.1 surround and HDMI input/output etc (Yamaha HTR-3063), and want to connect it to my PS3, as well as other sources. The amp cannot decode HD sound (the only drawback), so what's the best way of outputting?

Currently, I have the HDMI going into the Amp and then to the TV, and the audio coming out of Optical and have bridged to the two connections.

When I look in the "sound" settings in the PS3, there are various options for outputting sound, such as Bitstream or PCM/Linear PCM. What would be the best option for me to use? Linear PCM, so the PS3 does the decoding and passes it to the amp?

I've done various searches (including in other forums) and they are very contradicting. Just hoping for a clear answer (if that's possible!).

I just want to hear HD/Surround sound from GT5 and Blue Ray movies!

Cheers for your help gents

I am no expert here, but if you have PS3 connected to your amp via HDMI you don't need the optical cable, the HDMI will carry the audio.

Mine's connected like that and you can just let the PS3 detect the right mode.

It sounds like you have a slim PS3 as a "fat" PS3 only has the option of Linear PCM.

In any case it doesn't make any difference if your amp doesn't decode HD audio.

As said above, you don't need the optical lead as all audio for a PS3 can be sent down an HDMI and will be best done this way. The PS3 should automatically choose Linear PCM and that is what you want.

Mine is set up this way as I have a "fat" PS3. My amp will decode HD audio and I would rather it did but can't really be bothered to "upgrade" to a slim PS3 just for that.

Just so you know, the Sky HD box is different to this and you DO need the optical cable as it can't send decent audio down the HDMI.
