Just about to burn a DVD to send out to a friend in the States. I know to make it NTSC but wondered whether they're on widescreen like us yet, or still 4:3.

Any Americans (or people that visit there regularly) able to enlighten me?

By virtue of you writing here, yes it is real. I presume you mean the context of the thread though...

(Sorry, just feeling a little pedantic today! biggrin )

Burn it widescreen, if they're not stupid they can crop it for their square telly and it'll be future proof.

They were a bit slow on the uptake, but they're with us now

Goodo, thanks chaps.

And yes it is real, this is about the one and only area where the yanks lag behind us rather than the other way around.

They also do Dolby surround, you may wish to bear that in mind.

To Be serious you have to remember that many Americans did have "big" screens already. However Widescreen takeup was limited as many citizens of the US thought that They were losing part of the picture. Mainly because initially the "Anamorphic" Stretching of the picture was not a transmitted thing as in the UK. Their pickup of the sound was slightly ahead of the UK. Although Yorkshire TV did produce all of their Drama output in Dolby Pro Logic and digital as soon as they could.

There are still parts of the States where the citizens think they lose part of their soul if you take their picture, so seeing it demonstrated on a widescreen telly must've absolutely terrified them!

I hear some part of America even have mains water, though I'm not sure if you can drink it.

You can drink it, but it takes a while because you have to wait for an advert to flow out of the tap after every 50mls of water.

That wasn't one of those crappy rear projection TV's? I had a 52" HD ready panasonic rear projection thing, that was awful. Massive, heavy, made an annoying buzzing noise, and generally a bit of a fuzzy picture as the screen wasn't exactly inflexible.
