I am reasonably sure that this is down to me being a retard in some way shape or form but hopefully someone can narrow it down a little for me.

I have fitted the following subwoofer in my Elise

http://www.pioneer.eu/uk/products/archive/TS-WX11A...

to a Blaupunkt Woodstock DAB54 head unit

It is wired thus:

Main power wire - to battery
Switched 12V - to switched 12V on HU
The two phone plugs - I have split the coax and wired the two "inners" and two "outers" together. One is attached to the "live" speaker feed, and the other to neutral on the HU.

The sub works but there's something not quite right:

1) The "light" on the control box does not come on brightly. It's sort of dim all the time irrespective of whether the ignition is on or not.
2) The controls on the control box don't seem to do anything.
3) The sub works but the bass it produces is very boomy - to the extent the only way to listen to it is to turn the bass right down on the HU

All ideas gratefully received.

Which switched live on the head unit did you wire it to? there is usually an auxiliary live on the back of the head unit (usually blue cable from memory) that will only be live when the head unit is switched on as it is switched by the head unit not the ignition.

As for the phono plugs, there should be a preamp output on your head unit that bypasses the inbuilt amp on the head unit so the sub amp has a clear unamplified signal to use. These usually use a phono socket at both the sub end and head unit end so you can use a phono cable.

pretty much as above really smile

the switched 12v on some headunits is labelled as AMP or ANTENNA, or it may even have both biggrin

really shouldn't be running the phono inputs from a cobbled up lead on the speaker outputs of the headunit though eek
does the pioneer sub unit have a low level line input? if so, the speaker wires from either the front or rear channel of the H/U go to that

Hopefully this will make clear the extent of my idiocy.

Switched 12V to C6
Phono spliced knock up job to C3 and C4

Looks like you need an adapter cable to wire it in correctly, there are several different cable kits that allow you to use the different outputs.

Taken from the tech specs of your head unit : "Four channel (3.0V) preamp output for connecting external amplifiers (requires accessory cable)"

See the cable links on the right of this page : http://www.bluespot.co.uk/car-audio.aspx/woodstock...
