Hi and a Merry Christmas to all.

TV purchased from John Lewis almost 3 years ago to the day, broken for the 5th time and on this occasion it has been deemed uneconomical to repair, nice email today saying I have the original purchase price to spend on a new set.

This is where I pass it over to the PH massive. I've got £1095 or thereabouts to spend on a TV at JL. Must be 55" at least (yes, I'm a fully paid up member of the council thread) and not really fussed on much else. Planning on getting a PS4 Pro (4k) and don't mind waiting for the sales after Christmas.

Where would your money be going?

£1350 for the Sony 55XD9305.

IMHO it is the best LCD you can buy regardless of price at that size.

Their own ZD9 is better, but is only 65" and £4000.

Put the extra in, you will be chuffed to bits you have.

You'd have that over the Samsung UE55KS9000?

Every day of the week.

I bought the 8000 samsung, the flat version, recently and it went back after 10 days or so. It was no where near as good as my 3 year old W905 Sony.

It has its edge lights at the top and bottom which simply doesn't work.

I have an OLED at the moment and I am seriously considering swapping for the Sony 55XD93 myself, it has one of the most natural looking images of any display I have seen.

Well now I'm really torn. The TV that's broken is a Samsung but I'd happily have another, my other choice was the Sony range.

I am still trying to decide what to do and whether to get one.

I love the OLED image in many ways, but do miss the more natural look of the Sony W905 it replaced, and this new XD93 does quite a few things better than the W905.

It is tricky, the B6 OLED is now £1599, and the XD93 is now only £1299.
Both great TVs as frankly silly prices.

There are times when the OLED looks truly stunning, being able to do complete black gives the image real depth, but there are also times when it can look a bit processed, funnily enough it can often look a bit cartoonish in colours in the same way early LCD displays did compared to plasma.

I wish Sony did the ZD9 in a 55".

I'm no audiophile really, so the upper echelons of quality would probably be wasted on me in all honesty.

What's the general consensus on the Sony Bravia 55SD8505?

I'm with you there. Looking on the likes of AV forums etc is totally lost on me it's like they're talking in a different language - I would struggle to tell the difference between a £700 tv and a £3000 one, as would the vast majority of people.

The jump from the sd8505 is massive.

When one was £1100 and the other £1700 then there was an argument to go for the 8000 series, now it is £1100 vs £1300 you would be a bot silly to go for the 8505.

The XD9305 has a really, really good local edge lit system, that makes all the difference.

Not really, if you lived with both for a week you would get why one is so much better.

I was looking at the LG OLED (the flat version, not curved which I think was the B6?) but much of my content is in 720 and it looked terrible on the LG in-store. Amazing screen, it'll just show up any crap in low-res or poorly encoded files.

Might take a punt with the Sony at £1300 (the LG is still £1800?). I have a Love2Shop card courtesy of HP which has £600 on it so I'm a little more restricted where I buy from but I can't argue with saving that sort of money. I'll probably buy an Xbox One S as a 4k BluRay player to go with it...

OK then chaps, another question.

What are the feelings about the Hisense 65M7000?

65" and 4k, can't seem to confirm if it really is UHDR or not though. Some sites say yes others say no.

I've just upgraded my 8 year old Panny PHD7 panel for an LG OLED E6 having spent years sharing similar concerns about LCD / LED technology and their ability to display 'lesser content'.

I'm not sure I recognise your concerns re the LG screen, I think it's stunning in all resolutions, even SD is perfectly good. The set has just spent the last few days impressing the wider family with 4K, 3D, HD & DVD content, I don't regret the outlay at all!

Worth revisiting before you discount it.

Yeah, I must admit, never thought the OLEDs had a problem with SD either, the one thing they will do is show up....or rather not hide poor sources as well as some LCDs, but once you get to a normal viewing distance you really wont be able to tell. The problem is in shops, we tend to stand closer to the screen than we would ever sit at home, there can be a massive difference between viewing from 7' and 10', and I bet most people sit at least 10' from their screen, if not more.

You have to remember, if a screen hides poor video artifacts, it will also be hiding detail in decent sources too.

Oh and I loved the PHD7, the PHD6, 7 and 8 were imho some of the best displays ever made, the fact that a 50PHD7/8 would still give many modern displays a run for their money some 9 years after release says a lot about just how good they were.

They had such a natural look to them once calibrated, this was mine showing the Pioneer 1080p demo (it was a 1024x768 display for those who don't know it) ........

I found it beat the Pioneer Kuros in a many ways, loved them.

John Lewis have reduced the price of the Samsung 55 KS7000 by £400 to £899. A bargain if you ask me!

Just went and had a look at the Sony in store; lovely screen but one thing I couldn't find was an option for Plex. Too not have this would be enough for me not to get it - the guy in store was trying to help but couldn't answer definitively. Is Plex downloadable for the XD9305?

The model at Currys was 55XD9305B but I presume that's just Currys' own 'version' and is functionally the same?
