I am sure there has already been a few threads extolling the virtues of 'The Professionals' but I have to start one because they have just started showing them here is Oz and they are far better than I remembered. The cars obviously are good to have but also the story lines don't treat the viewer like an idiot and the chemistry and acting ability of the 3 leads is fantastic. It could never be made today because multitude bleeding heart interest groups would have a law suit lodged quicker than you could watch an entire episode. It is such a shame that we have allowed society to be dumbed down to the lowest common denominator. We have lost so many clever and satisfying things.

It's saying something when 'The Professionals' is being held up as an example of how 'clever' tv used to be and how far society has 'dumbed down' today!

indeed it is, can you think of other programs or other genres that wouldn't get a look in today? although I don't really want to start too broad a discussion.

i think reality tv is when the rot really started to set in.

Was watching an episode on ITV4 yesterday, lots of opposite lock action (ok some was on grass), but it was all filmed for real minimal (no) special effects, couple of times you saw slides that went a little too far but I'm sure they were left it as they looked great.

Looking back, it amazes me that one of the main characters (Bodie)was portrayed as totally heartless killer who sometimes found offing people (including women)amusing. Imagine trying to get that past a focus group these days! I'm astonished that they managed to sneak Gene Hunt under the radar.

No doubting it was a very entertaining (if slightly simplistic) programme at the time. There was an episode where a sniper held an entire intensive care ward hostage from a bunker on a neighbouring rooftop that sticks in the memory.

Its currently being re-made as a movie by the guy who did Dog Soldiers.

Read today n the Telegraph that Martin Shaw was offered the part of 007 by Broccoli's daughter. Shaw turned it down as he thought it would dominate his career.

I've heard a number of people comment that quiz shows are not as challenging as they once were. not as many shows anymore either.

I read he was offered the part of "steve Austin" in the remake of the 6 million dollar man ...but refused it because Bodie kept teasing him about being a "bionic gollywog"

I heard it was Lewis Collins who was offered Bond but then had the offer quickly withdrawn after they saw Who Dares Wins.

A quick Wiki now reveals he runs a gym in LA if you're wondering what happened to him. Guessing he'll cameo in the new movie but Martin Shaw won't as I hear he considers The Professionals an unfortunate incident in his career of being a serious actor.

I think its at very early stages at the moment, nobody cast yet but its been greenlit. I'm guessing maybe this time next year? Which should be about the same time as The Sweeney re-hash.

But that's an idea for PHers, who would be Bodie, Doyle and Cowley?

Can I just state here and now that Jason bloody Statham is not an option.

Going a bit A-list, Anthony Hopkins for Cowley?....I'm thinking of that scene from meet Joe Black...
"Are you threatening me?"....
"Yeah I certainly hope so"
