The BBC and its utter obsession with the Olympics.

Being just a tad pedantic, aren't you?
Whilst there isn't a truly 'official' table, the IOC publishes a table 'for information', ranked by gold medals. That's good enough for me (and, it seems, most nation's Olympic organisations)

There is definitely no "official" medals table.

No they don't. That's my point, it's not official in any way, shape or form. They publish a table.
It's ranked by golds.
It just happens to be marked 'for information only'... but most Olympic committees use it to measure their success.
Just sat through a 20+ minute adulation-fest on BBC about some cyclists
Seems someone got a knighthood (no less) for riding a push-bike (albeit very quickly) a while back and is now pontificating on the performance of other cyclists.
He had ridden a bike for living. He should be good, it's all he does.
Lots of folk are good at their job for 40 years and get bugger all.
Please, please stop the deification of sports people.
They are entertainers, nothing more.

Being good at your job. Being the worlds best at your job. Different things. Seems someone got a knighthood (no less) for riding a push-bike (albeit very quickly) a while back and is now pontificating on the performance of other cyclists.

The bigging up of sportspeople does a national serivce. If everyone rode bikes instead of playing call of duty then the NHS wouldn't be in such of a st state.

And some of them make a fortune doing it to. I do agree, knighthoods for gold medals seems a bit too much for me. Precedents seem to have been set. If your gold medal winner goes on champion causes that help the masses then yes. Some years later. Entertainers and sportsman get very well rewarded finacially with success, but they also get gongs.

Both Hoy and Wiggins got their knighthoods for outstanding achievements - not only doing things that no other British cyclist had done, but doing things no other cyclists in the world had done.Entertainers and sportsman get very well rewarded finacially with success, but they also get gongs.
Our cycling team is something we should celebrate and should be proud of. Maybe awarding them knighthoods will have inspired future generations? - we certainly seem to be on a roll, and it's not easy to book time at UK velodromes in recent years.

Correctiuon. Exceptionally successful people get gongs. The thing is, you've never heard of 3/4 of them.Entertainers and sportsman get very well rewarded finacially with success, but they also get gongs.
Try listening to Radio 4 then. So far, as well as Olympics coverage of course, they've also had regular news plus reports on Aleppo, the pension industry, the Labour leadership contest, exploitation of bicycle couriers in London, the apparent cashing in of CEOs of PLCs of their shares and some other stuff.
So plenty of non Olympic stuff if that is what you want.
