I watched that on my phone earlier and thought it cool. I've just watched it on my PC monitor, in 1080p full screen and actually started to get a bit emotional. Wibble.
Just watched it and it had the same effect on me too. I'm 52 and all my hairs are on end and I'm feeling very emotional!!! It's amazing how the use of actual, tangible, touchable sets can make a film (even in its trailer form) feel so much more real than any amount of clever CGI could ever begin to.
Luckily, I'm between jobs, so once my chores are done today, the trilogy is going on

so why is it that the X-Wing fighters need 4 big engines on them whereas the tie-fighters don't have any visible engines at all yet appear to be the same speed?
[geek mode]Some of this is from memory so may be wrong but...
The X-Wing is larger and has a built in light speed capability so it can operate far from home, think of it more as a multi-role long range fighter-bomber. The Tie fighter does have engines, Twin Ion Engines in fact which is where it gets it's name from as well as the distinctive sound. There are visible engine ports (just) from the rear but they work on different ION technology so you don't see the traditional engine glow from the exhaust ports. It's a smaller air superiority fighter and lacks a hyperspace engine so has to be launched from Destroyers etc.
Think of it as the difference between an F15 and an F16, designed for slightly different roles so different sizes and strengths. The rebels didn't have the resources to build lots of different types of craft so the X-wing was the do-it-all craft they used for quite a while, later they did develop dedicated fighters (A-Wings) and Bombers (B Wings)

So, how does Darth Vader manage to get away at the end of Ep IV, eh? The Death Star is destroyed and he's spinning off into deep space with his glorified Sopwith Camel. Plot hole!!!
1) He crash lands back on Endor2) He get's picked up by a Star Destroyer after sending out a distress call
3) His Tie fighter has jump capability
4) George never thought of that

His TIE fighter is an advanced version called the err Advanced Tie Fighter. You can tell it's advanced cos it has the curved wings rather than the straight ones of the normal TIE fighters. It also has limited hyperspace capability which allows Vader to escape to the nearest friendly Empire base. As far as I remember he is still stuck in it for fair number of days it takes him to fly there though so I hope his suit had proper air re-circulation built in or things could have got a bit smelly!MarkRSi said:
Going a bit off-topic but I'd recommend playing some of the old Star Wars games - TIE Fighter / X-Wing Vs TIE Fighter etc. as you'll get the fly the TIE Advanced in those
[Pedant Geek mode]The Tia Advanced in the Tie Fighter computer game was actually a development of Vader's Tie seen in the original star wars. It was later designated the TIE Avenger after the squadron that initially used it.
Vaders Tie became knows as the TIE X1 and was the prototype for the one found in the computer game.
It was part of a number of TIE designs that had shields and hyperdrive to combat the Rebels superior ships (Tie Defender, Hunter, Phantom), however due to MUCH higher costs, the empire went with massed Tie Fighters and Interceptors. (Quantity over Quality).
Yeah yeah, i liked Tie Fighter and Star Wars WAY too much when i was little....
