I've just re-watched the film from 1973 and as much as I am a huge fan of Johnathan Nolan I think it's going to be difficult to beat the original for its chilling sense of fear. I'm sure the new Westworld will continue to be a brilliant, multi-layered and paranoid narrative but the beauty of the film is in the simplicity and calmness followed by sudden outbreaks of terrifying realisation.

The Ed Harris, Man In Black character is a guest who's looking for the hidden levels in the game.

He's been going to Westworld for years now, so he's played and knows all the usual story lines. He's now looking for the hidden or secret levels like you would in a computer game.

Also in its 30 years Westworld has probably had many creative directors, story writers, code programmers. Maybe one of them has sneaked in a hidden storyline which takes you to a hidden level. This is what the Man In Black is after.

Another question would be, a Westworld visit wouldn't exactly be cheap so is he paying for it himself or is another company, agency or government paying him to find the secrets to Westworld?

Anyhoos, that's my thoughts after 2 episodes...

After reading this thread and the reviews, I'll watch it again tonight and look for all the extras in advance of Tuesday's fresh episode.

What was the music being played when the safe robbery was going on?
An orchestral rearrangement of Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones. There was a well known classical version done in the 70s/80s by the London Symphony Orchestra on their Classic Rock album so its not a new idea - but this wasn't it - very effective anyway.

That's the LSO one, always liked it. The Westworld one was really well done though.

It's a new version composed for the series. Same guy who does game of thrones.

It was an absolutely excellent scene.

Yeah I can imagine them releasing a soundtrack album to be honest if they're putting different tracks in every week.

Pay attention to the head psyche (or whatever she is).

Ed is portrayed as human, and very well may be true human, but considering the age of the park, (I'd say 40 odd years), he very well may be something that no one else at the park (save for Anthony) may have seen.

The man in black (Ed Harris) did say he'd been paying to come here for thirty years, to Delores, but that she wouldn't remember him. Iirc.

That's a lot of dosh.
It'll be interesting to see how he is referenced by members of the team.

It was also said that there hadn't been a critical failure in thirty years... perhaps the man in black was it, like a computer virus.

That's a reference back to the events in the original film, by all accounts.

From the pre screening interviews with some of the creators I saw, the humans are all the villains, ultimately. Turning around the basic premise of the film - in that, Yul Brynner was the robot bad guy. Now, the humans are the bad guys and we ultimately feel sympathy for the robots. At least, that was the basic premise.

But the sooner shouty British guy gets bumped off the better.
Yeah, shouty british script writer guy didn't appear in any of the trailers I saw. Within 5 seconds of him opening his mouth I could see why. Awful.

Yrs, I'm a big fan of the original film, I caught that. I didn't catch the number being repeated by, Ed.

This series is excellent, there's robot cowboys and slutty robot saloon girls. Ed Harris Anthony Hopkins, a fantastic soundtrack and it's filmed beautifully.

I think this is possibly the best new series opener I've ever seen. I'm completely hooked already.

I for one am looking forward to the inevitable robot cowboy and saloon girls uprising. hehe

HBO already suggesting a season 2 about to be announced based on the huge viewing figures and great reviews.

The OH and I watched the first two episodes back to back and both thoroughly enjoyed it. Decent writing, great cast aside from one or two misses and as usual with HBO great production values. Needless to say we are hooked but I hate waiting a week for each episode. Really tempted to leave it for a while now and come back when we can binge watch it.

The premise of abused robot slaves and rise of the machines is a very well known SF plot device and has of course been done to death but I still think the series for now at least has enough fresh ideas to keep us interested. As others have stated I just hope the writers are good enough to keep interest going as it does have huge potential to disappear up it's own arse just like Lost. I'm hoping the hinted at overall story arc will prolong interest though.

As for Ed Harris's character at the moment it looks like he is definitely human unless it's a clever double bluff. It states clearly he has been coming for 30 years, my bet is he is a very rich private individual who has somehow gotten his hands on some inside info on what else is going on at the facility and want's a piece of it.

Also think Hopkins character has definitely gone off the reservation (pun intended). He is obviously suffering from some sort of psychological or guilt issues about what he has created. My guess is he has a plan in place to free the host slaves in some way which is why he is doing a lot of unauthorised tinkering.

There are a few references to some kind of future plan for the robots, that only a couple of them are in the know about. The female manager points out to the English guy that he doesn't know what it is but she does.

Hopkins character presumably knows about the (evil cooperations) plan. Perhaps he doesn't want his robots to fall into the wrong hands. It's obviously OK for him to arrange for people to shag and shoot them on holiday though, hehe

Not sure if it's me, but the Westworld logo and that of Weyland/Utani are rather similar, which is also the last time a good storyline used "The Company" with a hidden agenda
