Ned doesnt have a reputation as a great swordsman because he does do tourney fighting. He is well regarded as a great warrior and leader of men. He is thought of in a different regard to Jamie that is all. Jamie is a tourney sword and has the great reputation becuase he fights for the crowd. Im sure I remember somewhere in the books Ned being refered to as a great swordsman aswell?

Sorry if ive manage to him up but didnt ned also win the only tourney he ever entered?
I always saw Ned more as a great leader rather than a spectacular individual warrior. In the books it talks about when they were fighting Robert's Rebellion and Ned and 6 others went up against 3 of the Mad Kings Kingsguard and it specifically says that if Howleen Reed hadnt saved Ned he would have died. I am not saying Ned is a bad fighter, just that Jaime was meant to be the best after Baristan Selmy, who is now quite old anyway. In the book Ned and Jaime never fight but I got the distinct impression it would not have gone well for Ned had they fought one on one. Maybe I am over analysing it!
Nope - that's how I've read it as well.

This is a minor point really - there's very little drift between the book and the telly dramatisation.

I watch the three films about the Stieg Larsson Millennium books and it was very frustrating as they often missed huge chunks and they didn't resolve at all well.

Hmm...I think they covered it well then, no-one actually won the fight and it didn't last long.
From the subtle expressions on the warriors faces Ned was giving it all and enraged and Jamie seemed mildly surprised at first then shook him off for another go. Jamie wasn't trying to kill him and from his character I wouldn't be surprised if he went at it half strength (ala the famous sword scene from The Princess Bride) just to see how good he was, hence the slight face he made in the clinch and being royally pissed off that he wasn't allowed to show Ned up on his own.

I also think too much aboot this sort of stuffbiggrin

I saw it that way too - Jaime was annoyed that he wasn't going to get a chance to put Ned in his place. Going at him while aiming not to kill would have put him in a severely compromised position as it is, and he didn't seem nearly as strained as Ned was.

In the book you get a bit more history of the bad blood between Ned and Jamie but spread over several different chapters. I think that scene works well and gives the viewer a sense of that bad feeling without having to include every detail from the book.

Ned was enraged because of the callous way his men had been killed, Ned really liked and got on with his soldiers, that was his leadership style.

The surprise from Jaime probably comes about because he would not have expected Ned to have been so upset, to the Lannisters they are just soldiers.

In his way Jaime is an honourable person as well, its just his morality is a little distorted. The incest thing is fairly common in the Seven Kingdoms, the Targaryans had married brother to sister for a long time and they were the royal family, so this would have been not that big a reach. Pushing Bran out the window was also not very moral but if you look at it from the family viewpoint he was protecting his family. If Jaime wasnt honourable he would have killed Ned when he had him after the spearman spiked his leg, but he didnt as that would not have been honourable.

I got that. Ned went off when his captain/mate got it in the eye. I think the writing/direction/acting has come together on this so that if you watch it, you get a lot from it.

Could it not be that one is physically fitter than the other and therefore the toils of combat harder?

Shhhhh wink

What I found interesting last time out was a perceived softening of the Queen when reminiscing with the King. She's been a cold bh so far but it was interesting to see the wistful look in her eye and by god there was even a smile or two.

Its one of the great things about the whole series. The players are not black or white, good or evil but a blend of both. In my experiance there are very few people who are 100% bad with no redeeming features at all( I believe fred west was a decent builder !).

Anyone thinking about their fave characters btw? I'm loving the imp, have to say. He's a great actor with a lot of charisma. I do also like Littlefinger - very good character, he did well in The Wire as well.

Arya is cool. I like the fight even if the character looks nothing like I imagined.
Also love the Hound. He is the man.

Jon Snow becomes a good character but thats prob for the next series. Much the same as the hound in many respects. Their character really grows!

Also not sure wether id rather bed queenie or banished queenie ha!

Agreed - it's been child's play so far. It's the reason I couldn't put the book down.

Yes but that will probably be a year away, they have just started scouting locations for it, looking at Croatia apparently in addition to Malta and Ireland again
