Mrs Browns Boys - Why doesn't it make me laugh?
Discussion
The good news is that the program managed to lose 2-million viewers for this year’s Christmas special. Perhaps the BBC will try to invest in something mildly entertaining for future years.
One can only assume that the 6-million that did watch it need new batteries in their TV remotes, because there was no competition worthy switching the TV on for, on other channels.
We stumbled into the 1971 Morcombe and Wise show and still found it hilarious. Someone wrote the other day that comedy is dead because everyone is offended about something. But M&W did not seem to offend anyone, or group.
Mrs Brown tends to be shown just before the news, so we inevitably seem to catch the last few minutes. Like others have said, there does not seem to be anything moderately whimsical about this program and surely a straight guy in drag must offend some viewers these days
The fact that the BBC pays to commission this rubbish certainly offends me.

About sums it up:

I thought the comment about Mrs Brown’s Boys being one day viewed with shaking of heads and wonder at the depths to which popular taste can descend was particularly apt.

It's comedy for people who don't "get" jokes and they need the laughter track to tell the morons when they are supposed to laugh
That I can agree with, but I’m not sure where I fit in with comedy viewing.I think that sitting in my wife’s car, watching the wash/wipe clearing the dust off the windshield is far more amusing than watching Morecambe and Wise.
I used to crack up at “The Fast Show”, and I love the political cut and thrust of “HIGNFY”, but I still run screaming into the night at the thought of Mr. Bean, or God forbid, those gibbering morons Keith Lemon, or Paddy McGuiness.
Many of the same criticisms aimed at Mrs Brown's Boys (puerile obvious gags, archaic unrealistic drag act, poor unrealistic sets, implausible story lines, ad lib improvisation and crap singing ) could equally well be applied to the traditional British pantomime, which also enjoy continued popularity.

Oh no they can’t. Numerous replies here talking about “canned laughter” and the “laughter track”. Mrs Brown might be a load of fking ste but the one thing you can’t accuse it of is canned laughter. They literally pull back to show you it being filmed in front of a live audience at the end of each episode

It must be canned laughter.... because there is no way the audience are laughing. berlintaxi said:

Hasn't been any political cut and thrust on HIGNFY for about the last 10 years, just lazy scripted "banter", a show which has well and truly jumped the shark.0a said:
We had our more council relations over this Christmas, and one request was to watch the Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas special.
I really enjoyed it. Silly, self aware, naff, clever and not very PC. I sense a lot of the opposition is down to snobbery.
If thinking, as I do, that MBB is unadulterated dross, makes me a snob, then I’d better put a laminated sign on my front door;I really enjoyed it. Silly, self aware, naff, clever and not very PC. I sense a lot of the opposition is down to snobbery.
HOI POLLOI, PLEBEIANS, AND GREAT UNWASHED, PLEASE MOVE ALONG,

Good call reminding us of 'Birds of a Feather'. I was stunned when it made a come back. I guess some things just wont die.
A 'Pauline Quirk' Theatre School has opened near us (West Yorkshire) - I noted from an advert on the back of a bus. No doubt someone will be along in a minute to tell met that she is ex RSC or similar, but in my view it suggests that there is much wrong in society!
Re Mrs Brown - I do not know how many episodes they made, but it seems to be endless repeats, Definitely unsophisticated comedy that requires little thought and the gags are obvious rather than subtle. Maybe more suited to American humour and tastes?
