Properly Scary Films

Another vote for Blair Witch. More the drama and suspense of the story as it unfolded and being able to feel the emotions of what they were going through.
The part where they wake up and their mate has gone missing but they are not sure if he has just wondered to the stream or something, and they have to make the decision to stop looking for him and carry on looking for a way out. Very real, low key suspense.
In a similar way, recent film Dark Skies really freaked me out, very well done. Again not too OTT just a gradual build up of the story

Quite a few people have mentioned Event Horizon. Glad it's not just me that this scared the crap out of!

fk Event Horizon. Scared me for years when younger. Think I did see it when I was about 12 though."Where we're going, you won't need eyes to see"
On a side note, and not scary to me now; I watched Alien at the weekend. I forgot how utterly amazing and engrossing it is. Such an amazing film.
The new game Isolation isnt half bad either.
I love Horror films
Ever since seeing Night of the living Dead. Big fan of the original films, Night, Dawn and Day of the dead. Its the horror of realising humanity is gone forever. Yes the zombies are shocking but theres a deeper horror about seeing everything you know and love being destroyed.
The opening scene in Day of the Dead is perfect example. The music, the realisation that everyone is dead of worse. Truly horrifying!
Event Horizon was a good one too. The thought of A: going that deep into space where you are so far from home, and B: Going into a ship which has disappeared and seemingly come back without explanation. The idea that the drive opened a portal to a different universe which is hinted as being where we get the idea of Hell from. No way to reason with it, no stopping it just the urge to run away and not being able too.
The Mist was another good film. The books also good, maybe better if you have a good imagination and haven’t seen the film first. The idea of a simple trip to the shops turning into such horror. The ending too is pure horror on a totally different level.
Obviously Alien and Aliens worked their magic too. In fact I think that DVD will get an outing tonight!

Some right Jessies on here.
Event Horizon is chilling, yes, but scary? I really struggle to be genuinely scared by films and it annoys me a bit as I love a fright. The Descent, really???
I'd agree that The Shining is actually scary the first or second watch. The Ring..... perhaps, but not really, it's ok I suppose.
The test of a scary film for me is will I watch it alone in my old house and then happily bimble down stairs for a glass of water without turning all the lights on
I find it hard to suspend disbelief so when things get a bit far fetched I snap back to reality quickly. The shining works in this regard as for the majority of the film you can easily believe it's just a man succumbing to his on fragile mind state. In a class of it's own imho.

Same here, Keyser. It's a bit like picking a scab though, I can't help myself when she asks if I fancy it. She's eyeing up this Babadook film for the cinema when it comes out, I'll be parking right next to the cinema if we are seeing it, wouldn't fancy a walk back to the car in the dark!

In 1997, when I saw this film, I was 25 - so at an age when I had seen many 'scary' movies and laughed at most of them.
I often used to go to the movies alone, I think it is better overall, you can concentrate and take in the film best by yourself.
I remember watching this one like it was yesterday. I was by myself, in a movie screen which was almost empty on a late-night showing. I like to sit quite near the front if I can - I feel more 'immersed' in the film that way. When I saw this, I was right near the front, totally by myself.
I can honestly say that it also buggered me right up! I wasn't prepared for such an assault on my scary senses. A great achievement for a modern film to be able to still do that I think!

I watched The Descent, not knowing the plot of it. So when you first see the monster behind the woman, I cacked it!!Event Horizon is chilling, yes, but scary? I really struggle to be genuinely scared by films and it annoys me a bit as I love a fright. The Descent, really???

I considered the one of the worst situations ie the one I would most like NOT to be in.
The Babadook is supposed to be rather scary.

The Vanishing (dutch version)

Just watched Event Horizon - fk me the only thing disturbing about this film was the music that accompanied the credits at the end. Jesus what a load of ste.
Apparently they had to cut 20mins from the original edit to get an R rating. There is a VHS of this plus lots of info on Internet. The cut bits are pretty freaky!Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
